A Landmark in Jaipur's Luxury Retail Scene

The Museum of Meenakari Heritage & Flagship Store, designed by Studio Lotus, redefines retail architecture by blending luxury jewelry design with cultural heritage. Located in Jaipur, India, this project serves as both a retail space and an immersive museum experience, celebrating the intricate artistry of Meenakari enamel work. The 20,360-square-foot space is a tribute to the craftsmanship of Sunita Shekhawat, a renowned jewelry designer known for her contemporary interpretation of traditional Rajasthani artistry.

Reviving the Legacy of Meenakari

The ancient technique of Meenakari, which originated in Persia, has flourished in Rajasthan for centuries. The art form, characterized by vibrant enamel work on metal, has been passed down through generations and is deeply embedded in the region’s artistic heritage. Sunita Shekhawat revitalizes this tradition by infusing a modern touch into her timeless jewelry collections. Studio Lotus’ design for the flagship store reflects this philosophy, balancing heritage with contemporary aesthetics in a rapidly evolving urban landscape.

Sustainable Design Approach

When Studio Lotus was commissioned for the project, an existing concrete shell had already been constructed. Instead of demolishing it, the architects opted to repurpose the structure, aligning with their commitment to sustainability and reducing embodied carbon footprints. The spatial layout strategically integrates a museum gallery on the ground floor, a luxury retail store in the basement, and corporate offices on the upper floors. The top floor, offering panoramic views of the Rajmahal Palace, is designated for a future high-end restaurant.

Architectural Inspiration: A Fusion of Styles

The store’s architecture draws from multiple historical influences, including Rajputana, Mughal, and Art Deco elements, creating a distinctive design language that mirrors the fusion of tradition and modernity seen in Shekhawat’s jewelry. The exterior features hand-carved Jodhpur red sandstone, a tribute to the designer’s Jodhpur roots, while seamlessly blending into Jaipur’s iconic Pink City aesthetic.

Exterior and Facade

The architectural identity is shaped by the interplay of intricately layered patterns and beveled balconies, weaving together diverse historical influences into a cohesive structure. The double-height entrance arch, clad in red sandstone, makes a striking statement, reinforcing the grandeur of the flagship store.

Interior Design: A Symphony of Craftsmanship

Inside, the store’s three floors are united by a sculptural staircase that serves as a central focal point. The design narrative unfolds through a meticulously curated sequence of spaces, ensuring a seamless transition between museum, retail, and design studios.

The Museum Experience

A significant highlight of the project is the Meenakari museum-gallery, conceptualized by Sidhartha Das and curated by Usha Balakrishnan, a leading expert on Indian jewelry traditions. The museum educates visitors about the origins, evolution, and techniques of Meenakari craftsmanship, transforming the flagship store into a custodian of Rajasthan’s cultural heritage.

Luxury Retail with a Bespoke Approach

The lower-ground floor, designed for an exclusive by-appointment-only experience, features a library-lounge leading into four private jewelry viewing pods. Each pod is finished in off-white 'araish' lime stucco, with semi-vaulted ceilings adorned with intricate miniature fresco paintings depicting Rajasthan’s architectural and natural landscapes. Created over several months by 12 master artisans, these frescoes celebrate the handcrafted luxury ethos of the Sunita Shekhawat brand.

Functional Design and Personalized Customer Experience

The retail space is meticulously planned to ensure a highly personalized customer experience. A concealed service corridor allows staff to discreetly manage operations, maintaining the exclusivity and intimacy of the shopping journey. The lighting design, crafted to enhance the brilliance of enamel jewelry, ensures that the focus remains on the intricate details of the pieces on display.

A New Paradigm in Luxury Retail

The Sunita Shekhawat Flagship Store is more than just a retail destination—it is a celebration of art, heritage, and storytelling. By integrating a museum experience into a luxury retail setting, the project establishes a new benchmark for experiential retail design. This innovative approach not only honors the legacy of Meenakari craftsmanship but also redefines how heritage and commerce can coexist harmoniously in modern urban environments.

By merging cultural preservation with contemporary luxury, Studio Lotus has created an architectural masterpiece that stands as a beacon of Rajasthan’s artisanal excellence. The Museum of Meenakari Heritage & Flagship Store serves as a testament to the evolving identity of Jaipur—where tradition meets modernity in a seamless and immersive experience.
