Located in the heart of Alcabideche, Portugal, Oficina do Bacalhau is an architectural gem crafted by COM/O atelier. Completed in 2021 under the guidance of lead architects Afonso Gomes and Miguel Duarte, this project transforms an existing building into a unique culinary destination specializing in codfish and its derivatives.

The two-level establishment features a dynamic layout. The ground floor houses a bar, a serving counter known as a “barra,” and an inviting outdoor terrace, while the upper floor is dedicated to a full-service restaurant. This spatial organization allows customers to experience both casual and formal dining experiences within the same venue.

Embracing the Concept of a Cod Workshop

The interior design draws heavily from the idea of a functional codfish workshop. The walls are intentionally coated with rough plaster, evoking an industrial and unrefined aesthetic. Complementing this, the majority of the furniture is constructed from stainless steel, enhancing the utilitarian workshop ambiance.

Light serves as a key design element, softening the starkness of the raw surfaces. The architects skillfully incorporated natural light and strategic artificial lighting to infuse warmth and comfort into the space.

Neon Signage and Custom Design Details

A distinctive feature of Oficina do Bacalhau is its warm-toned neon signage. These custom-designed lights punctuate the interior, adding vibrancy and character to the otherwise minimalistic environment. Every design detail was tailored specifically for the venue, ensuring a cohesive visual identity.

The result is a modern interpretation of a traditional concept, celebrating Portugal’s deep-rooted connection to codfish while providing a contemporary dining experience. The project showcases the innovative approach of COM/O atelier, blending industrial aesthetics with hospitality design.
