Shenzhen Capital Plaza by CCDI GROUP 21 Design Studio blends coastal inspiration, structural innovation, and sustainable design into Shenzhen’s iconic urban landmark.
Shenzhen Capital Plaza is a landmark skyscraper designed by CCDI GROUP 21 Design Studio, completed in 2022 after nearly a decade of planning and construction. Rising 262 meters in the heart of Houhai, Shenzhen, the tower spans a massive 167,640 square meters, establishing itself as a vital hub that merges commerce, transportation, and coastal public life. Strategically located beside the China Resources Headquarters, the project connects the office and business district with Shenzhen Bay, making it a dynamic urban gateway.

Urban Context & Connectivity
The site itself presented three unique characteristics:
- A backdrop of high-density office and business zones, with expansive views toward Shenzhen Bay.
- Interwoven subway lines, streets, and two-level pedestrian networks running through the base.
- A layered urban node that integrates business, transit, and coastal activity.
With these factors, the development was envisioned as a "hub park", where commerce, transit systems, waterfront spaces, and roof gardens converge. The podium acts as a connective fabric, weaving together retail, transportation, public plazas, and open-air landscapes, ultimately functioning as a modern-day Central Park for Houhai.

Architectural Concept & Design Identity
The design adopts a distinctive folded façade inspired by the dual symbolism of waves and diamonds—an ode to Shenzhen’s coastal setting and financial strength. This geometry creates a tower that conveys stability, lightness, and elegance while enhancing visual dynamism across the skyline.
By deriving the façade from triangular modules, the design achieves a crystalline surface that balances aesthetics with performance. The tower also embraces efficiency and innovation in both structural integration and spatial planning, ensuring that it is not only iconic but also practical for contemporary office life.

Spatial & Form Development
The tower’s shape generation was carefully studied to maximize spatial value:
- Extending the massing east to west optimized sea views and enhanced office quality.
- The base recessed in the north-south axis, creating plazas and enhancing pedestrian flow.
- The crown expanded north-south and compressed east-west, ensuring premium headquarters offices at the top enjoy ideal orientation and panoramic southern views.
This strategic manipulation of form allowed the project to maximize daylight, views, and urban integration.

Structural Innovation
The building employs a steel rhombus diagrid structural system, merging architecture and engineering into a seamless expression. This external structural frame is both aesthetic and functional, reducing the need for excessive internal supports and freeing interior space. However, the complexity of the diagrid required extensive research into node force behavior, ensuring the system’s safety, economy, and constructability. The result is a structure that is both visually striking and structurally optimized.

A Breathable Façade
Sustainability played a critical role in the tower’s design. The curtain wall skin incorporates concealed operable panels that allow for natural ventilation and smoke exhaust, reducing energy demand during transition seasons. An 800mm decorative strip conceals the openings, simultaneously improving wind resistance during typhoons and enhancing safety.
Additionally, the façade integrates Low-E insulated glass and carefully engineered triangular panels to maintain the folded aesthetic while solving complex installation challenges. This creates a breathable epidermis—a façade that is high-performance, resilient, and elegant.
Shenzhen Capital Plaza is more than a skyscraper—it is an urban ecosystem, bridging architecture, landscape, engineering, and community life. By blending iconic form with structural innovation and sustainable strategies, CCDI GROUP 21 Design Studio has delivered a new landmark for Shenzhen’s skyline—one that reflects the city’s rapid growth and forward-looking urban identity.
