Silverlake Terrace Bungalow Renovation and Extension by ARA-la Studio
Silverlake Terrace Bungalow Renovation by ARA-la Studio transforms a 1946 home with modern extension, open interiors, indoor-outdoor flow, and timeless design.
Located in Los Angeles, the Silverlake Terrace Bungalow Renovation and Extension by ARA-la Studio is a masterclass in blending modern architecture with the charm of a mid-20th-century home. Originally built in 1946, this hipped roof bungalow underwent a thoughtful interior and exterior renovation, including a minor addition and the conversion of an Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU), resulting in a refined, functional, and contemporary residence.
Having lived in the home for nearly a decade, the homeowners possessed a deep understanding of the property’s strengths and limitations, enabling the design team to maximize every inch of the urban corner lot while adhering to a modest budget. The renovation carefully balances modern aesthetics with warm, comfortable living spaces, achieving an environment that is both stylish and practical.

Architecture and Exterior Design
ARA-la Studio preserved the original hipped roof while introducing a modernist box extension. This addition subtly recedes the traditional roofline and integrates awnings and trellises, emphasizing the horizontality of the eaves. Drawing inspiration from the nearby historic Neutra VDL Residence, the renovation enhances the original bungalow’s simplicity while adding nuanced architectural details that elevate the overall aesthetic.
The exterior celebrates a clean, contemporary palette with concrete finishes, landscaped gardens, and open terraces, creating seamless transitions between indoor and outdoor spaces. Expansive La Cantina doors open directly onto the backyard garden, fostering ultimate connectivity between living spaces and nature.

Interior Design and Spatial Planning
The interiors feature an open, uncluttered layout, designed to enhance flow and maximize natural light. Private and semi-private spaces, including the front study and ADU, are scaled for intimacy while maintaining functional versatility, serving as offices, guest rooms, or creative spaces.
A neutral and refined color palette dominates the interiors. White oak millwork softly reflects natural light, while textured linen wallpaper in the primary bedroom and bathroom draws inspiration from Japanese ink paintings, adding subtle artistic depth. Carefully placed accents provide timeless pops of color, enriching the atmosphere without overwhelming the space.

Design Philosophy
The renovation exemplifies ARA-la Studio’s approach of contextual modernism, enhancing the simplicity of the original bungalow while introducing functional, elegant, and contemporary details. The project prioritizes indoor-outdoor living, visual openness, and spatial comfort, all while respecting the architectural history of Silverlake’s neighborhood.
With meticulous attention to detail, the Silverlake Terrace Bungalow Renovation embodies a perfect harmony of modern design, warmth, and livability, creating a timeless home that feels expansive yet intimate.
