Transforming Space and Light in Hair Salon Design: The LICHT Salon / CANOMA Story
This article explores the transformative design of LICHT Salon in Sendai, showcasing innovative use of space, light, and natural materials.
In the heart of Sendai, Japan, a remarkable transformation has taken place, setting a new benchmark for hair salon design. The LICHT Salon, designed by CANOMA, is a testament to innovative design, where space and light converge to create an inviting and sophisticated atmosphere. This article delves into how the LICHT Salon has redefined salon interiors, merging functionality with unparalleled aesthetic appeal.

The Challenge of Space and Light
Facing the Darkness: A Unique Architectural Challenge
Originally a deep, dark space cut off from natural light, the building that now houses LICHT Salon posed a significant challenge. Its location, facing Sendai's bustling arcade shopping district, offered limited opportunities for natural illumination. The architects at CANOMA were tasked with transforming this gloomy space into a vibrant hair salon that felt lively and sophisticated, irrespective of the number of occupants.

A Dome of Light: Architectural Innovation
The solution was both innovative and visually striking—a dome-shaped luminous ceiling stretching from the entrance to the salon's rear. This artificial canopy not only compensates for the lack of natural light but also emphasizes the salon's depth, turning a potential drawback into a standout feature.

Design Philosophy: Blending Nature and Craftsmanship
Anchors in Space: Inspired by Nature
Within the homogenous space, solid constructions reminiscent of trees in a meadow or rocks on a riverbank serve as gathering points in an otherwise undefined area. These elements, carefully chosen and placed, guide the salon's layout and encourage social interaction.
Ginkgo Wood Furniture: A Touch of Nature
The furniture, crafted from solid ginkgo wood, was meticulously selected for its color, shape, and the natural beauty of its grain. This attention to detail ensures that each piece not only serves a practical purpose but also enhances the salon's overall aesthetic.

A New Perspective on Salon Design
Reflective Landscapes: Dynamic Interiors
The arrangement of seating and mirrors in LICHT Salon is deliberate, designed to create a dynamic landscape that changes as people move throughout the space. This thoughtful placement allows for an interactive experience, where reflections and views intersect in ever-changing patterns.

The Future of Salon Design
LICHT Salon / CANOMA stands as a pioneering example of how hair salons can transcend traditional design boundaries. By embracing the challenges of space and light, the project highlights the potential for hair salons to be more than just places of business—they can be works of art, spaces of wellness, and communities.

A Blueprint for Future Innovations
As we look to the future of salon interiors, LICHT Salon serves as a source of inspiration and a benchmark for innovation. Its success lies not just in overcoming the challenges of its initial condition but in reimagining what a hair salon can be. Through a harmonious blend of nature, craftsmanship, and architectural ingenuity, LICHT Salon / CANOMA has set a new standard for innovative hair salon design, proving that with creativity and vision, even the most unassuming spaces can become places of beauty and light.
