Cinema has always depended on architecture to frame the relationship between story, screen, and spectator. Yet as home entertainment systems become more sophisticated and virtual reality becomes increasingly accessible, the traditional movie theatre faces a fundamental question: what can a cinema offer that cannot be recreated at home?
Virtual Insanity, a project by Keerthigan Thavaseelan and Tyler Bakhtiari, responds to this challenge by reconsidering cinema through the lens of virtual reality architecture. Rather than treating VR as an additional layer of technology inside a conventional auditorium, the proposal explores how physical architecture and virtual environments can become interdependent.
Shortlisted in the Cinema Futurismo competition, the project imagines a cinema in which audiences are no longer passive viewers. They become participants who can enter, influence, and physically engage with cinematic worlds.


Rethinking the Traditional Cinema Experience
The project begins with a critique of contemporary cinemas.
One concern is accessibility. Conventional theatre layouts can restrict movement and often treat wheelchair accommodation as an adjustment to a fixed seating system rather than an integrated part of spatial design.
