Watchtower
The Cabin Competition
The design proposal is a hybrid between a typical Norwegian cabin and an observation tower with connection to the local context. The project provides a refuge space for the trekkers and serves also as tourist hospitality space. In addition, the facility is equipped with an observation point overlooking Lake Vågåvatn and the surrounding mountains. Inside there is a corridor, a storage room, a trekking equipment repair room, three rooms with bunk beds, a toilet, a bathroom, and a large open space serving as a living room, kitchen and dining room. Each room with bunk beds has a large vertical window located on the east side to illuminate the room early in the day. Local Norwegian wood in a dark shade was used on the facade. The side elevation was covered with openwork wooden poles transmitting light and acting as a railing.
