Beegraphy's Computational Design Challenge Series
Architecture - Building Facades
Shape the future of architecture! This challenge invites architects, engineers, and designers to explore the cutting-edge potential of parametrization and computational design in revolutionizing building facades. We challenge you to envision sustainable, efficient, and visually stunning facades that push the boundaries of traditional construction methods. Whether you dream of creating a climate-responsive building facade or a digital facade that acts as an activator for itself and its surroundings, this is your chance to propose new and unconventional ways to redefine architecture using building facades.
Objective
Participants should use the BeeGraphy editor to design a building facade. You can choose an existing structure and define the context for your design, your design must be parametrized and justified for the structure you have chosen.
- Case I (Digital Facade): Refer to the brief of Prima Facie - Digital facade design for our cities’ urban fronts (Milan, Italy) for design guidelines on creating facades for existing structures.
- Case II (Skyscraper Facade): Refer the brief of Alter- Challenge to design a sustainable facade for a skyscraper for guidelines on designing facades of a Skyscraper.
Note: These cases are examples of how you can define the context for your design. It is not mandatory to use these specific cases. Participants can choose the location and context of the building on their own.

Design Criteria:
- Innovation: Demonstrate creative and effective use of parametrization and computational design in facade development.
- Sustainability: Incorporate sustainable practices and materials, focusing on energy efficiency, reduced waste, and environmental impact.
- Aesthetics: The facade should be visually appealing, adding architectural value to its surroundings.
- Functionality: Ensure that the facade meets all functional requirements for the chosen structure, including safety standards and durability.
- Integration with Environment: Designs should consider their environmental context, integrating with local landscapes or urban settings effectively.
What We’re Looking For:
- Innovative implementation of the BeeGraphy tool in your design development and its practicality.
- Groundbreaking designs that push the limits of what computational design can achieve in facade architecture.
- Facades that are not only functional but also serve as models for future developments in architectural design.
Examples to Inspire:
- Climate-Responsive Facade: A facade that adapts to changing weather conditions, optimizing energy use and comfort for occupants.
- Digital Interactive Facade: A facade with integrated digital displays and sensors that interact with the environment and passersby, providing real-time information and visual interest.
- Sustainable Green Facade: A facade that incorporates greenery and sustainable materials, promoting biodiversity and reducing the building's carbon footprint.
- Cultural Facade: A facade that reflects the local culture and history, using traditional patterns and materials in a modern, innovative way..
