In a groundbreaking venture that challenges conventional design norms, Dratler Duthoit Architects have unveiled their latest masterpiece: an extraordinary kindergarten that pays homage to the covered playground as the heart of the school. The visionary design seamlessly integrates the path of children, from the street to the classroom, while redefining the extension's facade.

At the core of this innovative project lies a captivating covered playground that transcends its utilitarian purpose. Comprising a mesmerizing colonnade of non-standard section wooden pillars, the design aims to celebrate the raw essence of natural elements. Each pillar, bearing its own unique flaws, knots, and splits, becomes an emblem of individuality, fostering a poetic and didactic environment for the children. As students embark on their journey through this remarkable space, they are encouraged to discover their favourite pillar, mirroring the architects' belief in personal connection and engagement.

The architectural marvel embraces a humble monumentality that bridges the classical aesthetics of the existing building. Departing from the standardized approach, the oversized colonnade showcases the craftsmanship of the carpenter, combining irregular elements with orderly architecture. The pillars ingeniously support partly hollowed-out beams, meticulously assembled with Jupiter traits and reinforced by oak keys. This fusion of techniques creates an aesthetic dimension, uniting the diverse elements into a harmonious whole.

Adding an enchanting touch to the design, the colonnade is crowned with Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) wooden slabs, enhancing the structure's integrity while resembling contemporary Stonehenge. Meanwhile, the playground rests on a sculptural volume of sandblasted concrete, meticulously crafted to resemble the cut stone of the existing building. The interplay of wood and concrete evokes a captivating juxtaposition, celebrating nature's beauty within an architectural setting.

Upon entering the kindergarten, one is greeted by a wide central corridor that serves as a connection point between the extension and the original building. This spacious hall sets the stage for a journey of exploration and learning. Four classrooms, separated by a distinctive crank-shaped wall, provide separate spaces for various activities. The interior architecture brims with peculiarities, boasting a vibrant blend of materials and colours that create a visually stimulating environment.

The design revels in the heterogeneity of materials and polychromatic compositions, successfully infusing a domestic character into the space, ideal for the children's appropriation. Visible solid spruce beams grace the ceilings, while beech wood benches and oak classroom cabinets accentuate the diverse woodwork. Glass walls adorned with curtains create an atmosphere of transparency and privacy, offering an immersive learning experience.

Dratler Duthoit Architects' exceptional kindergarten design represents a departure from traditional educational spaces, embracing nature, individuality, and creativity. By reimagining the covered playground as the catalyst for architectural innovation, the project not only provides a nurturing environment for young minds but also offers a visually captivating experience for all. The architects' emphasis on craftsmanship, unconventional materials, and meticulous attention to detail culminates in a groundbreaking masterpiece that is poised to inspire generations to come.
