A Contemporary Retail Experience in Busan

diagonal Store, designed by oftn studio, is a meticulously crafted showroom located on the 4th floor of Shinsegae Department Store in Busan, South Korea. Spanning 65 square meters, this innovative retail space reinterprets the concept of showroom design by integrating structural contrast and minimalist aesthetics. Following its initial showroom in Hannam-dong, Seoul, diagonal sought to establish a new presence in Busan, aiming to create an immersive spatial experience that aligns with the brand's identity.

Architectural Concept: A Seamless Flow of Space

The showroom layout is defined by a C-shaped structure that guides visitors through an intuitive and fluid shopping journey. This layout forms a hanger zone, allowing various products to be displayed in a well-organized and visually engaging manner. Six distinct pillars strategically placed within the space direct movement while adding a sense of structural dynamism. These elements contrast with existing wall materials, creating a three-dimensional spatial effect that enhances depth and visual interest.

Materiality and Design Philosophy

diagonal Store embraces achromatic materials, emphasizing a neutral palette that serves as a backdrop to highlight the products on display. The design philosophy revolves around simplicity and uniqueness, reinforcing the brand’s essence through a restrained yet sophisticated material selection. By combining diverse physical textures, the showroom achieves a balanced interplay of raw and refined aesthetics.

Key Material Highlights:

  • Concrete Elements: Structural and textural depth
  • Metal Shelving: Industrial elegance and durability
  • Stainless Steel Partitions: Mirror-like reflections for an expansive feel
  • Large Mirrors: Creating an illusion of extended space
  • Barisol Ceiling Section: A distinct design feature adding diversity to the spatial experience

The Role of Contrast in Spatial Perception

One of the most compelling design elements in diagonal Store is its use of contrast. The juxtaposition between a highly reflective stainless steel partition and a concrete panel backdrop creates a striking visual dialogue. This interplay of materials not only defines different zones within the showroom but also enhances the perception of depth and spaciousness. The fitting room, featuring a large external mirror, further amplifies this sense of expansiveness, making the compact space appear larger and more open.

A Focus on Functional and Aesthetic Integration

The showroom integrates a display-focused approach by incorporating functional zones that seamlessly blend with the architectural composition. The hidden space behind the counter back wall introduces a sense of privacy, reinforcing the concept of a well-defined retail environment. Meanwhile, the speaker zones and metal shelving units contribute to a harmonious combination of function and aesthetic refinement.
