Nestled in a semi-rural neighborhood of Tochigi, Japan, the House in Tochigi by Tsuyoshi Oshiyama Architects exemplifies a seamless blend of minimalist architecture and natural landscapes. Completed in 2023, this 248 m² residence was designed for a client passionate about gardening, aiming for a calm, tranquil atmosphere where nature and living spaces coexist harmoniously.

The house is conceived as a box-like, minimalist composition, featuring stacked and shifted volumes that create a layered spatial rhythm. Exterior walls echo this structure, guiding the visual experience while allowing a sculptural presence within the site. Thoughtful placement of mechanical equipment—boilers, rain gutters, and outdoor units—ensures both functionality and aesthetic discretion.

With a generous site, the design transcends the conventional “house with a garden.” Instead, it fosters a dialogue between architecture, open spaces, and the surrounding landscape. Unique gardens punctuate the property: an arcing front approach, a north garden for the Japanese-style room, and a bedroom garden highlighting the client’s favorite tree. Cantilevered volumes extend toward these gardens, further blurring the boundary between interior and exterior.

Over time, the mature trees have softened the architecture, giving the residence a gentle, composed presence in its neighborhood. The thoughtful integration of natural landscapes, minimalist volumes, and functional design makes this home a serene retreat, reflecting the client’s love for greenery and the architects’ attention to detail.
