Hudson L-House: A Sculptural Live-Work Residence by Steven Holl Architects in New York
L-shaped aluminum-clad residence in Hudson with courtyard, birch-lined interiors, curated midcentury furniture, skylit spaces, sustainable geothermal systems, and sculptural architectural details.
A Modern Courtyard Home Inspired by Midcentury Design
Hudson L-House by Steven Holl Architects is a striking contemporary residence located in Hudson, New York, designed for acclaimed modern furniture gallerists Mark McDonald and Dwayne Resnick. Spanning 165 m² (1,700 sq ft), this compact yet expressive L-shaped home blurs the boundaries between architecture, art, and landscape.
Set on a once-vacant urban lot, the structure completes the existing neighborhood fabric while carving out a south-facing green courtyard, offering privacy, natural light, and a serene outdoor room at the center of daily life.

Architectural Concept & Material Expression
Corrugated Aluminum Skin with Cerulean Interior
The home’s form is defined by a simple L geometry clad in custom “finger-width” corrugated aluminum. This cost-efficient, maintenance-free exterior shifts with the sun throughout the day, creating kinetic shadows and a luminous façade.
The color palette is a thoughtful balance of white outer walls, cerulean-green inner surfaces, and soft blue canopies—a subtle nod to the historic Southern tradition of “Haint Blue”, believed to protect homes from spirits.
Inside, a warm and minimal palette dominated by birch plywood sets a neutral stage for the owners’ exceptional midcentury furniture collection, including rare works by Frank Lloyd Wright, Marcel Breuer, Alvar Aalto, and Rudolph Schindler.

Spatial Organization & Light Strategy
Courtyard, Catwalk & Sky Monitor
The L-shaped plan smartly organizes public and private functions:
- Living and working spaces placed at opposite ends
- A west-facing garden connecting interior and nature
- A catwalk and pop-up sky monitor pulling sunlight deep inside the wood-lined spaces
- Strategic window placements framing views toward the Catskills Mountains and the historic Terry Gillette Mansion
Natural daylight filters from all orientations, creating a luminosity reminiscent of Hudson River School painters. The south-facing sleeping nook features joined picture windows, offering a calm framed panorama of landscape and historic context.

Crafted Details & Artistic Elements
Playful Geometry & Custom Lighting
Every detail reinforces the conceptual clarity of the L form:
- A rotated 45-degree powder room acting as a hinge between public and private zones
- Corner-wrapping glazing expanding narrow angles
- A custom brass “Hudson L” light fixture interpreting the architectural form
- A sculptural folded-brass fountain in the courtyard circulating rainwater
These subtle yet expressive moments transform the compact home into a spatial artwork—both intimate and immersive.

Sustainable Performance & Natural Systems
Geothermal Climate Control & Water Integration
Sustainability is seamlessly integrated through:
- Geothermal heating and cooling
- Renewable energy strategies
- A rain-collecting pool and courtyard pond
- Low-maintenance metal cladding
These systems significantly reduce energy usage and reinforce the home’s connection to seasonal rhythms and hydrological cycles.

A Dialog Between Architecture, Furniture & Landscape
Hudson L-House is a holistic live-work sanctuary where architecture, curated design, and nature converge. With its sculptural form, natural material palette, and luminous interior, the residence becomes a contemporary stage for historic modernist furniture—merging past and present, craft and innovation, urban fabric and private retreat.
