Innovative Small House Design: Exploring Tanabata House by Meguro Architecture Laboratory
The article highlights Tanabata House's innovative small house design in Tokyo, blending terraced gardens and adaptable spaces for dynamic family living.
In the heart of Musashino City, Tokyo, lies a testament to innovative small house design: the Tanabata House. Designed by Meguro Architecture Laboratory, this 85 m² home is a marvel of architectural ingenuity, catering to the dynamic needs of a family of four.

The Concept Behind Tanabata House
The Challenge of Space and Nature
Nestled in a residential area rich in natural beauty, the Tanabata House faces the challenge of a corner plot prone to waterlogging. This constraint inspired the architects to create a terraced garden, not only solving the water issue but also providing a versatile outdoor space for the family.

The Terraced Garden: A Multi-Functional Outdoor Space
The terraced garden at Tanabata House is a prime example of maximizing small spaces. With 40cm high concrete curbs demarcating it from the road, this area serves various purposes from playgrounds to BBQ party spaces, showcasing the resilience and adaptability of innovative small house design.

The Heart of the Home: "Uchi Niwa"
A Space of Connection and Versatility
"Uchi niwa," the inner garden, is the architectural soul of Tanabata House. This double-height, open space seamlessly connects interior and exterior elements, blurring the lines between different home areas both horizontally and vertically. It embodies the essence of innovative small house design by offering a flexible area that adapts to the changing needs of its occupants.

Adaptable Living Through "Uchi Niwa"
The "Uchi niwa" exemplifies versatility, serving as anything from a work area to a play space, or even a temporary dining room. Its design ensures that it can respond dynamically to the family's requirements, transforming the concept of fixed-use spaces in homes.

Redefining Small House Living
Tanabata House by Meguro Architecture Laboratory redefines the possibilities of innovative small house design. Through its terraced garden and the concept of "Uchi niwa," it provides a blueprint for future homes that are adaptable, connected to nature, and deeply mindful of the occupants' evolving lifestyles. Tanabata House is not just a structure; it's a living, breathing space that accommodates the flow of life within its walls.
