Small Office Space Design: Naturanda by Ignacio Frade
Explore Naturanda by Ignacio Frade, a small office space design in Madrid that optimizes functionality while preserving historical elements.
In the heart of Madrid, Spain, Ignacio Frade has transformed a compact commercial space into a functional and aesthetically pleasing office for Naturanda. This 538 ft² project exemplifies innovative small office space design, optimizing every inch for multiple uses while preserving and enhancing its historical elements. This article explores the design strategies and architectural solutions that make Naturanda a model of small office space design.

Project Background
Vision and Challenges
The primary challenge was to optimize a small 50 m² space for a variety of simultaneous uses. The design needed to incorporate bespoke furniture elements that relate to each other and allow for different spatial configurations around a central pillar, which could otherwise have been an obstacle.

Structural Interventions
During the construction process, unforeseen structural problems were discovered, including two metallic pillars hidden in a partition wall. These pillars lacked continuity with the upper floors and covered an existing gap in the premises. The solution involved a structural intervention to clean up and expose the new beam, integrating it seamlessly into the space.

Design and Material Use
Recovery and Reuse
The project uncovered and restored several historical elements, such as plaster moldings and an in situ terrazzo floor hidden under a poor-quality surface. By recycling and reusing these forgotten elements, the design reduces environmental impact and restores the space's cultural roots.

Integration of Old and New
The dialogue between mid-20th-century original pieces and contemporary elements is achieved with respect and consideration for the space. The integration of these elements enhances habitability and flexibility, creating an open-plan office that takes full advantage of its height and historical character.

Functional and Aesthetic Solutions
Bespoke Furniture
The incorporation of bespoke furniture allows for various spatial configurations, optimizing the small office space for different uses. The geometric adaptation of these pieces creates synergies that enhance functionality and aesthetic appeal.

Lighting and Color
The design employs specific use of corporate colors and strategic lighting to unify the proposal's language. The exposed beam and integrated structural elements contribute to the space's modern yet respectful aesthetic.

Naturanda by Ignacio Frade is a prime example of innovative small office space design. Through careful optimization, structural interventions, and the respectful integration of historical elements, the project transforms a compact commercial space into a functional and aesthetically pleasing office. This approach sets a new standard for small office design, demonstrating how thoughtful architecture can maximize space and enhance cultural heritage.
