Sustainable Architectural Design in India: A Case Study of Bandhan Residential School of Business
This article explores the sustainable architectural design of Bandhan Residential School of Business in India, focusing on local integration and eco-friendly practices.
In recent years, sustainable architectural design has become increasingly important in India, as both environmental awareness and local cultural heritage play critical roles in shaping the construction landscape. One notable example of this trend is the Bandhan Residential School of Business, designed by Abin Design Studio, which showcases an innovative approach to sustainable building practices.

Project Overview: Bandhan Residential School of Business
Located in Kankalitala, India, the Bandhan Residential School of Business covers an impressive area of 10,000 square meters and was completed in 2023. The project stands out for its dedication to sustainability and its deep integration with the local environment and cultural context.

Architectural Philosophy and Design Approach
Embracing Local Environment and Culture
The architects at Abin Design Studio drew inspiration from Rabindranath Tagore’s Bishwa Bharati University, promoting a design that emphasizes harmony with nature. The layout features individual blocks interspersed among existing trees, which not only preserves the natural landscape but also enhances natural ventilation, thereby reducing the reliance on mechanical air conditioning.

Innovative Use of Local Materials
The construction utilizes local burnt-brick, a material chosen for both its aesthetic qualities and its environmental benefits. The façade incorporates intricate patterns that are not just decorative but also functionally significant, aiding in temperature control while adding to the structure’s unique character.

Sustainable Features and Techniques
Natural Cooling and Green Roofs
The orientation of the buildings and the strategic use of opaque facades on the South-West reduce heat gain significantly. Additionally, various heights of green roofs further assist in cooling, while also creating a diverse, layered landscape that enhances the site’s visual appeal and biodiversity.

Craftsmanship and Community Involvement
The project empowers local craftsmen, incorporating their skills into the very fabric of the building. This not only supports the local economy but also ensures that traditional techniques are preserved and adapted in modern constructions, fostering a sense of community and continuity.

The Impact of Sustainable Architecture
The Bandhan Residential School of Business by Abin Design Studio serves as a profound example of how architecture can transcend its traditional role and become a conduit for sustainable and socially responsible practices. This project not only respects the physical and cultural landscape of its location but also sets a benchmark for future sustainable architectural projects in India.
