3 to 1 Pavilion by TEMP: A Contemporary Wooden Sanctuary in Shanghai
The 3 to 1 Pavilion by TEMP is a serene wooden garden sanctuary in Shanghai, featuring triangular geometry, charred wood, and meditative spaces.
The 3 to 1 Pavilion, designed by TEMP in 2024, is an elegant wooden pavilion nestled within a serene garden in Shanghai, China. Spanning a compact 15 m², this contemplative structure offers an immersive experience for tea ceremonies, meditation, and intimate social gatherings. Conceptually, the pavilion explores the delicate interplay between time (时间), space (空间), and people (人间), emphasizing the beauty of interstitial spaces and transitional experiences.

Triangular Geometry and Spatial Harmony
At first glance, the pavilion’s sleek triangular form stands out amidst the lush greenery, rocks, and water elements. This geometric precision not only creates a visually striking presence but also guides visitors along a subtle journey, from casual interactions to introspective moments. The design culminates in a tall, narrow opening that perfectly frames a view of the garden, forging a profound visual connection with nature and reinforcing the pavilion’s role as a meditative retreat.

Progressive Framing and Spatial Narrative
The pavilion’s structure is composed of 30 sequentially changing rectangular frames, forming a progressive path that gradually narrows and rises as one moves inside. This intentional progression guides visitors through a spatial narrative, reflecting a journey from the ordinary toward contemplation. As the interior space transforms, the framed view of the pond beyond becomes a central focal point, encouraging reflection and a deepened sense of environmental awareness.

Dynamic Light and Seasonal Shadows
One of the pavilion’s most striking features is its vertical louvered columns, which function as both structural elements and sophisticated light filters. These louvers create a continuously evolving pattern of shadows throughout the day, marking the passage of time while enhancing the pavilion’s meditative ambiance. The play of light and shadow transforms the space with the seasons, turning a small structure into a dynamic experience that engages visitors on multiple sensory levels.

Charred Wood: Materiality and Cultural Resonance
TEMP selected charred wood (yakisugi technique) for the pavilion, merging durability with aesthetic depth. The carbonized surface ensures water resistance while producing a rich, dark texture that evokes introspection and purification, a symbolic nod to renewal through fire. The material harmonizes with the surrounding natural environment, offering a subtle yet bold architectural presence that balances between human activity and ecological context.

A Small Structure with Profound Impact
Despite its modest scale, the 3 to 1 Pavilion demonstrates the potential of compact architecture to influence human perception and experience. By creating a sensory and contemplative environment, the pavilion encourages visitors to pause, reflect, and engage in meaningful rituals. It exemplifies how architecture can mediate between the built environment and nature, blurring the line between daily life and contemplative practice.
The 3 to 1 Pavilion stands as a testament to the poetic possibilities of modern wooden architecture, integrating geometry, light, materiality, and cultural symbolism into a single, immersive experience.
