A Masterpiece of Landscape Architecture in Chengdu
A sustainable, culturally inspired garden by West 8, merging Chengdu’s heritage and modern design for the 2024 World Horticultural Expo.
Xiaoliangtan Garden, designed by the renowned architecture firm West 8, showcases an innovative blend of natural elements and Chengdu’s rich traditions. Created for the 2024 Chengdu World Horticultural Expo, this garden exemplifies a thoughtful integration of sustainability, culture, and modern landscape design.

A Tribute to Chengdu’s Natural Heritage
Xiaoliangtan Garden draws inspiration from Chengdu's historical connection to mountain creeks, offering a tranquil space for visitors to reconnect with nature. By incorporating red sandstone sourced locally from Sichuan's riverbeds, the design seamlessly merges modern aesthetics with traditional craftsmanship.

Innovative Design and Layout
Organic Flow of Space
One of the unique aspects of Xiaoliangtan Garden is its lack of defined routes. Visitors are encouraged to explore freely, engaging with the space as they desire. The three gently sloped terrains converge in the center, where streams form a pebble-lined basin that invites interaction.

A Cool Respite
Nicknamed “The Cool Garden,” the space provides shaded areas under tree canopies, where visitors can enjoy the soothing sounds of flowing water. Stone edges around the streams allow people to sit and cool off by placing their feet in the water, fostering a sense of community and relaxation.

Sustainability and Local Materials
West 8 prioritized the use of local red sandstone, reducing the environmental impact of material transportation. This decision not only supports sustainability but also highlights the cultural significance of the region’s natural resources.

The Garden's Legacy Beyond the Expo
Opened in September 2024, Xiaoliangtan Garden continues to thrive, becoming an enduring feature of the surrounding park. Its innovative design has made it a popular destination for both locals and visitors seeking serenity and social interaction.
