Adisaptagram Society Hall by Abin Design Studio: Redefining Community Architecture in Chinsurah, India
Adisaptagram Society Hall in Chinsurah blends contemporary design with local terracotta-inspired forms, offering multifunctional community spaces and climate-responsive architecture.
Located in Chinsurah, India, the Adisaptagram Society Hall is a landmark community center designed by Abin Design Studio under the leadership of Lead Architect Abin Chaudhuri. Completed in 2022, this 1850 m² community hall stands as a modern reinterpretation of conventional government auditoriums, blending contemporary architecture with local cultural references.

Collaborative Vision and Project Background
The project emerged through a collaboration with the region’s Panchayat, with the government allocating a budget of 2.5 crores INR for a public auditorium. Rather than adhering to the standard “cookie-cutter” design, the local councilor insisted on creating a hall that offered both functional and aesthetic value, pushing for a contemporary approach that could serve private and public events alike.
Despite several constraints, including strict bureaucratic protocols, a limited budget, and reliance on a contractor experienced primarily in road-side municipal construction, Abin Design Studio embraced the challenge, prioritizing community engagement, contextual design, and cost-effective construction.

Thoughtful Design Within Constraints
The Adisaptagram Society Hall is designed as a peri-urban district community hub, featuring a small auditorium and multi-functional halls for social gatherings, cultural events, and community meetings. The architectural language draws inspiration from local terracotta temple forms, emphasizing layered patterned fenestration and facade cutouts, integrating tradition with modernity.

Practicality Meets Creativity
Abin Design Studio focused on spatial efficiency and constructability, ensuring the design could be executed by an inexperienced contractor without compromising quality. The use of local materials and traditional construction methods kept the project within budget, while thoughtful detailing enhanced the hall’s architectural character.
The hall’s design encourages community pride and engagement, demonstrating that even government-funded infrastructure can be elevated through innovative, context-sensitive design solutions. The project showcases the potential for communities to actively enhance public spaces, bridging the gap between functional infrastructure and architectural expression.
