Alpine Minimalist Architecture: ATTO Suites by Pedevilla Architects
ATTO Suites by Pedevilla Architects showcases Alpine minimalist architecture, blending regional materials, historic charm, and contemporary design in San Candido.
A Contemporary Retreat Rooted in Tradition
Nestled in the picturesque village of San Candido, beneath the towering Haunold mountains, the ATTO Suites by Pedevilla Architects redefine Alpine minimalist architecture. This newly designed guesthouse and restaurant seamlessly integrates with the historical fabric of the town while establishing itself as an independent and modern architectural statement. Through a carefully curated selection of regional materials, clean lines, and panoramic spatial arrangements, ATTO Suites embodies the delicate balance between past and present, offering a harmonious retreat in the heart of the Dolomites.

Context and Urban Integration
Honoring the Historic Fabric of San Candido
San Candido, located in eastern High Pusteria Valley, boasts a 1,250-year-old history, with architecture that has evolved organically over the centuries. ATTO Suites sits within the historic center, following the traditional building alignments that define the urban texture of Färberstraße. Unlike its predecessor, the new structure reinforces the street's character, complementing the surrounding heritage structures while introducing a refined, contemporary presence.

A "Home Away from Home" with Public Engagement
More than a luxury retreat, ATTO Suites is designed with a public dimension in mind. The ground floor houses a farm-to-table restaurant, featuring a mountainside guest garden that seamlessly connects with the adjacent pedestrian zone through a newly created pathway. By opening up to the town, the project fosters community interaction, transforming the site into a lively gathering space for both locals and visitors.

Architectural Form and Spatial Experience
Gabled Minimalism with a Contemporary Edge
With its gabled front, ATTO Suites takes cues from Alpine vernacular architecture, yet its clean geometric lines and refined material palette establish a distinct modern identity. The building’s orientation maximizes mountain views, with each suite offering a direct visual connection to the Haunold peaks. A unique design feature is the incorporation of loggias, which act as private theatre boxes framing the dramatic Alpine scenery.

Ornamentation Inspired by Alpine Traditions
A subtle yet meaningful design element is the drop-shaped ornamentation that recurs throughout the project. This motif, deeply rooted in Alpine traditions, is integrated into various architectural details, reinforcing the connection between past craftsmanship and contemporary design interpretation.

Materiality and Sustainability
Regional Materials with a Deep Connection to Place
The selection of local materials plays a fundamental role in the architectural expression of ATTO Suites. The tinted insulating concrete façade harmonizes with the natural tones of the surrounding landscape, while handcrafted terrazzo floors, plaster finishes, and roof tiles reference the historic use of Sesto brook stone, which has been a defining element in the region's architectural history since the 12th century.

Warm Interiors with Sustainable Woodwork
Inside, the suites are characterized by minimalist yet warm aesthetics, achieved through the use of regional woods such as spruce and fragrant stone pine. These materials not only enhance the sensory experience of the space but also contribute to sustainability and local craftsmanship. The restrained yet highly tactile material palette embodies the principles of Alpine minimalist architecture, where simplicity meets an intimate connection to nature.

Redefining Luxury in the Alpine Landscape
ATTO Suites by Pedevilla Architects represents a new paradigm of Alpine minimalist architecture, where historic context, material authenticity, and contemporary design converge to create a timeless retreat. By seamlessly integrating into the historic center of San Candido while embracing modern spatial and material principles, this project sets a benchmark for architectural elegance in mountain environments.

Through its respect for tradition, refined minimalism, and sustainable material choices, ATTO Suites demonstrates how architecture can elevate the experience of place, offering guests a luxurious yet deeply rooted connection to the Alpine landscape.
