A Renovated Apartment with Farmhouse Charm in São Paulo
Located in the vibrant Vila Madalena neighborhood of São Paulo, Brazil, Apartamento Rodésia underwent a thoughtful renovation led by Memola Estúdio and Vitor Penha. The 110m² apartment was transformed with a design approach that seamlessly merges urban aesthetics with rustic farmhouse influences, creating a warm and inviting home.
Designed for a Franco-Brazilian couple with two young children, the renovation focused primarily on the social and service areas, aiming to reflect historical architectural references while maintaining a contemporary feel. The result is a space that embodies comfort, elegance, and functionality.


A Vision Rooted in Tradition and Modernity
The homeowners were already familiar with the studio's work, having previously collaborated on their farmhouse project. Inspired by that experience, they sought to bring a similar cozy and nostalgic aesthetic to their city residence. The objective was to create an open, airy layout where the living room, kitchen, and dining area are fully integrated, maximizing social interaction.
One of the standout features of the renovation was the entrance door, sourced from Construverde, which immediately sets a countryside tone. The apartment’s ceiling was stripped to expose and revitalize the original slab, adding character while complementing the new lighting design. The only element left untouched was the wooden flooring, preserving its authentic charm.


A Refined Rustic Interior with Bespoke Design
The social area underwent a complete transformation with custom-designed furniture, reflecting an elegant yet unpretentious aesthetic. The bookshelf behind the sofa, designed by the architects, introduces a sense of lightness and openness, allowing books and decor pieces to take center stage.
To enhance the romantic, delicate essence desired by the homeowners, the armchairs were upholstered in soft fabrics, while the iron display cabinet and dining table were exclusively crafted for the space. These elements balance refined craftsmanship with rustic textures, reinforcing the urban farmhouse concept.


A Kitchen Designed for Elegance and Functionality
A major highlight of the renovation is the kitchen, which underwent a structural redesign. The removal of dividing walls allowed for a seamless connection between the dining area and service zone, creating a fluid, open-plan layout.
The flooring choice played a crucial role in the transformation, as the architects sought to blend industrial and artisanal influences. The selected hexagonal tiles with floral patterns, sourced from specialized suppliers of traditional ceramics, added a touch of old-world charm.
The custom-built concrete countertop, cast in place, serves as a bold focal point, complemented by neutral-toned hydraulic tiles and light gray joinery. These carefully curated elements establish a harmonious color palette, ensuring that the intricate flooring remains a defining feature.


Preserving Architectural Legacy in Every Detail
Further enhancing the rustic character, the powder room showcases tiles salvaged from historic demolitions, extending from the walls to the ceiling. The sink, sourced from Minas Gerais, was a unique find by Paulo Amorin, adding an artisanal touch.
Meanwhile, the balcony floor was revitalized while preserving its original charm, maintaining the property’s architectural history and timeless appeal.

Apartamento Rodésia is a testament to the power of thoughtful renovation, where tradition meets modernity in a sophisticated yet welcoming ambiance. By integrating rustic textures, handcrafted details, and a cohesive material palette, the architects successfully created a home that embodies history, comfort, and timeless design.
