Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts – A Landmark Transformation by Studio Gang
The Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts blends historic restoration and contemporary design by Studio Gang, uniting art, architecture, and landscaped public spaces.
The Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts (AMFA) in Little Rock, United States, has reemerged as a world-class cultural destination after a bold transformation led by Studio Gang Architects in collaboration with SCAPE Landscape Architecture. Completed in 2023, the project redefines both the museum building and its surrounding landscape, creating a seamless connection between art, architecture, and nature.
Spanning 133,000 square meters, the new design revitalizes historic structures while integrating them with a striking central addition. Studio Gang’s vision introduces an organic, pleated roof form that blossoms outward, symbolizing growth, creativity, and renewal. This dynamic architectural gesture not only provides a distinctive identity for AMFA but also opens the museum toward the city and the surrounding MacArthur Park, encouraging public engagement and cultural exchange.

Restoring History, Embracing the Future
One of the most notable features of the project is the restoration of the 1937 Art Deco façade, now serving once again as the museum’s north entrance. On the opposite side, the new south park-side entrance welcomes visitors into a light-filled, fluid interior space. The design emphasizes natural light, intuitive circulation, and a balance between historic preservation and contemporary architecture.
Inside, the museum houses the Harriet and Warren Stephens Galleries, the Windgate Art School, a Performing Arts Theater, the Cultural Living Room, a Museum Store, and a restaurant, all designed to enrich the cultural and social life of Little Rock.

Architecture Meets Landscape
Beyond the building, SCAPE’s 11-acre landscape design extends the museum experience outdoors. The park features biodiverse plantings, shaded seating areas, walking paths, and outdoor sculptures, allowing visitors to enjoy art and nature together. The landscape not only enhances the ecological richness of the area but also transforms the museum into a community hub where cultural life and natural beauty coexist harmoniously.

Materials and Craftsmanship
The project also highlights high-quality materials, including Terrazzo Flooring – Terroxy Resin Systems by Terrazzo & Marble, which contributes to both durability and aesthetic appeal within the interiors.
The revitalized Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts stands as a cultural landmark for the region, celebrating the intersection of history, architecture, and landscape. With Studio Gang’s innovative design and SCAPE’s ecological vision, AMFA has become more than just a museum—it is a vibrant, inclusive destination for art, education, performance, and community gathering.
