Situated in Barrancos, Portugal, Barrancos Mortuary by Mesa Atelier is a refined example of contemporary cemetery architecture. Covering 250 m², the mortuary integrates seamlessly with the surrounding landscape, balancing functional design with introspective spaces for remembrance and reflection. The project responds thoughtfully to the site’s topography, climate, and cultural context, creating a sensitive and timeless architectural intervention.

Site Integration and Landscape Sensitivity

The mortuary is strategically placed between the upper cemetery level and a centennial olive grove, maintaining existing sightlines and respecting the natural terrain. Traditional dry-stone walls frame the site, while carefully designed exterior interventions, including pavements, retaining walls, and landscaping, reduce visual impact and mitigate heat island effects. The design achieves a harmonious dialogue between architecture and territory, preserving native vegetation and emphasizing the site’s natural beauty.

Architectural Form and Spatial Organization

The building’s layout progresses from a public square overlooking the landscape to a schist stone foundation supporting white funeral chapels, a reflective water tank, and a luminous atrium. The atrium functions as a central distribution space, connecting public areas—such as chapels, restrooms, and kitchenette—with service areas, including storage and facilities for the worship leader. Interior spaces are carefully arranged to promote calmness, privacy, and contemplation.

Interior Experience and Lighting

Inside, the chapels are designed to interact with natural light dynamically, changing throughout the day and across seasons. The flexible seating system and integrated furniture accommodate differentiated ceremonies, allowing the chapels to merge for larger gatherings. Materials like wood, concrete, and local schist reinforce a tactile and serene atmosphere while reflecting the local vernacular architecture.

Cultural and Material Considerations

The design emphasizes continuity with local construction culture, using white-painted surfaces in contrast with schist stone and on-site wood. This approach honors Alentejo’s architectural memory, supports small local economies, and maintains a connection with Barrancos’ heritage. The building is conceived as “built with the landscape,” blending modern architectural principles with traditional materials and techniques.
