A Sustainable Vision for the Future

The modular design of Besahapio ensures flexibility, scalability, and environmental harmony. This futuristic city is built on an iron grid framework, creating a strong structural base while allowing for organic growth. Public spaces, vibrant neighborhoods, and dynamic building typologies converge to create an inclusive and lively urban fabric.

The city is organized into distinct modules, each designed to serve as self-sufficient units while contributing to the larger ecosystem. Open spaces are "cut out" from the grid, forming walkways and plazas that connect residents and encourage social interaction. Each module incorporates green spaces, promoting a balance between urban density and nature.

Architectural Highlights

1. Residential Blocks:

Inspired by traditional courtyard houses, the residential blocks combine modern villas around shared green spaces. With varying heights of three to four stories, these blocks include two to four-bedroom apartments, studios, and corner buildings. These courtyards are designed with tilted wind towers that use ETFE foil for natural cooling, offering a comfortable microclimate within the desert's harsh conditions.

2. Mixed-Use Buildings:

The mixed-use prototypes are designed to integrate retail, offices, clinics, and residential spaces within a single structure. Lower floors are occupied by commercial and industrial spaces, while upper levels cater to residential and office needs. The buildings feature double-layered ETFE facades that maximize natural light while minimizing heat, ensuring energy efficiency throughout.

Emphasis on Community and Mobility

Besahapio prioritizes pedestrian-friendly streets, bikeways, and micro-mobility vehicles to reduce the reliance on private cars. Below street level, a hyperloop station and a circular train line provide rapid and sustainable transportation options. Additionally, the city incorporates electric vehicles for emergency and special transport services.

The Role of Public Spaces

Public spaces are at the heart of Besahapio’s design philosophy. The city is divided into nine quarters, each featuring plazas that serve as hubs for community gatherings, family activities, and cultural events. These spaces also connect seamlessly to underground transit stations, ensuring easy accessibility for all residents.

Climatic and Environmental Strategy

Besahapio employs cutting-edge environmental strategies to create a comfortable and sustainable urban environment. The grid is rotated 30 degrees to the west, maximizing shadows and preventing hot winds from blowing through the streets. Cooling systems, natural ventilation, and the extensive use of greenery further enhance the city’s livability.

A Visionary Project by Beatrix Baltabol

Besahapio, conceptualized by Beatrix Baltabol, represents a revolutionary approach to urban design. This shortlisted entry for the EHC - Sahara competition demonstrates how innovation and tradition can coexist to create a sustainable future. By addressing the challenges of desert living through modular urbanism, Besahapio redefines the possibilities of architectural resilience and human-centric design.
