Coastal House Design in Brazil: MMB Residence by Pitta Arquitetura

Harmonizing Architecture with Nature in Ubatuba
Located in Praia do Itamambuca, a vibrant coastal region in Ubatuba, Brazil, the MMB Residence by Pitta Arquitetura exemplifies thoughtful coastal house design rooted in environmental sensitivity and spatial elegance. With a total area of 250 square meters, the residence embraces the tropical climate while offering a tranquil, modern living experience closely aligned with its natural context.

Climate-Responsive Design with Natural Materials
Designed by architects Thiago Brunini Pitta and Rodrigo Alves Pereira, the house integrates wood and glass to blend aesthetic refinement with functional comfort. These materials are not merely stylistic; they also support the project’s goal of maintaining cool indoor temperatures, even during the intense summer heat of coastal Brazil. The architects’ intention was to create a space that encourages direct interaction with nature, while still offering the protection and privacy of a permanent home.

Transparency and Cross Ventilation Define the Layout
The core of the residence lies in its open-plan social spaces, designed for optimal transparency between the front and rear of the plot. Floor-to-ceiling openings allow sunlight and ocean breezes to flow through the house freely, fostering a naturally lit and well-ventilated environment. The design strategy employs a roof with beveled eaves, which visually lightens the structure and softens its silhouette. This choice not only creates architectural rhythm but also emphasizes harmony with the surrounding landscape.

Spatial Flow Between Indoors and Outdoors
The ground floor hosts three of the home’s five suites, alongside a kitchen, living room, and porch that are seamlessly connected. The upper floor contains the remaining two suites, maintaining a sense of vertical privacy. The kitchen operates as the heart of the home—fluidly linked to the garden and outdoor gourmet area. This spatial logic encourages social gatherings and reinforces the home's connection to its outdoor environment.

Wood and Landscaping as Sensory Anchors
Wood dominates the visual and tactile experience throughout the residence, from structural frames to cabinetry and detailed finishes. It brings a warm, organic quality to the home that contrasts gently with the coastal vegetation just outside. Native plants are carefully integrated into the garden, curated to thrive in Ubatuba’s specific coastal climate. The landscape strategy ensures a vibrant, evergreen character that enhances both sustainability and beauty.

A Model of Brazilian Coastal House Design
The MMB Residence stands as a model for coastal house design in Brazil, successfully balancing sophistication and comfort with a deep respect for climate and place. It proves that sustainable architecture can be elegant, open, and profoundly connected to its environmental context.
