Coworking Space in Baró de Viver by midori arquitectura: A Flexible, Community-Focused Hub in Barcelona

Designed by midori arquitectura and located in the Baró de Viver neighborhood of Barcelona, this compact yet dynamic coworking space occupies just 40 square meters. Commissioned as an extension of the Synergics initiative, the project addresses not only the spatial demands of a post-pandemic remote work culture but also the deep-rooted social inequalities in this urban district.

Community-Driven Design with a Purpose

Born in 2016, Synergics is a collaborative platform offering freelancers and small companies affordable workspaces in exchange for community engagement. With high unemployment and social disparities defining the area, the initiative transforms architecture into a tool for social regeneration.

As demand for remote-friendly environments surged after COVID-19, Synergics responded by expanding its spatial network, converting this additional unit into a multi-use, flexible workspace for meetings, courses, and solo calls. Previously, single users occupying large meeting rooms led to underutilized resources. The new design resolves this by optimizing spatial adaptability and acoustic control.

Adaptive Layout and Architectural Strategy

The interior architecture emphasizes simplicity and lightness, using white walls and floor-to-ceiling windows to maintain a fluid connection with the urban context while allowing privacy through curtains when needed. The space can be quickly reconfigured: acoustic curtains enable dual occupancy or a singular open layout for group activities, creating acoustically insulated zones for concentration and collaboration.

The ceiling palette, unlike the continuous flooring, introduces distinct color-coded islands to enhance spatial identity. This subtle yet effective ceiling design conceals technical elements like curtain tracks, allowing for smooth transitions between configurations. These chromatic zones echo Bauhaus aesthetics and visually reinforce the cooperative spirit Synergics promotes.

Sustainable and Scalable Social Design

This project is not just a coworking environment—it is an embodiment of architecture serving civic empowerment. Through spatial clarity, multifunctionality, and minimalist interventions, midori arquitectura crafts a blueprint for urban micro-intervention that scales with the needs of its users and community.
