Cultura: The Next Food Hub Evolution in Sustainable Architecture
Cultura redefines food architecture by merging urban farming, research, and community spaces into a sustainable food hub of the future.
The project Cultura (New Covent Market as Food Hub 2.0), designed by Vincent Phang and Boon Kuan Tan, envisions a groundbreaking model in sustainable architecture that integrates food, learning, and urban living. Shortlisted in the Urban Meal Mine competition, this project proposes a futuristic hub that responds to changing food consumption habits and the urgent need for resilience in urban environments.

A Vision for Future Food Architecture
Cultura is not merely a marketplace—it is an architectural ecosystem where food production, research, and community converge. The design acknowledges the dynamic food landscape of the 21st century, where innovation in agriculture, sustainability, and community-driven consumption is essential. From vertical farming to algae façades, the project introduces a new typology of food architecture that supports both ecological and social needs.
Key Architectural Features
- Interactive Farming Zones – Cultura includes vertical planting systems, algae workshops, and hydroponic modules, encouraging public participation and awareness in urban agriculture.
- Research & Innovation Spaces – Laboratories, workshops, and fabrication hubs are embedded within the architecture to promote experimentation, food science, and decentralized production.
- Market Integration – Unlike traditional food markets, Cultura’s open market, processing centers, and wholesale spaces are seamlessly connected with production areas, blurring the line between producers and consumers.
- Sustainable Building Systems – The façade incorporates ETFE-infilled algae panels and retractable hydroponic systems that generate fresh produce while serving as an architectural envelope.

Food as a Driver of Urban Architecture
Cultura embraces the concept of prosumers—where consumers become producers through direct involvement in food cycles. This participatory model transforms the architecture into an incubator of ideas, fostering innovation and knowledge sharing at both local and global levels. With spaces for seed sowing, 3D food printing, and guerrilla farming, the hub becomes a living laboratory for the future of urban food systems.
A Sustainable Future for Cities
The project demonstrates how sustainable architecture can play a pivotal role in addressing global challenges of food security, climate change, and urban resilience. By merging cultivation, culture, and community, Cultura creates a new paradigm where food production is not hidden but celebrated as a civic and architectural experience.
