The Daegu Anchor Facility in Suseong-gu, South Korea, designed by 1990uao in collaboration with Jadric Architektur, redefines how adaptive reuse can transform residential structures into vital community assets. Completed in 2022 with a project area of 399 m², the building sits at the heart of Deulan Village, a cultural hub surrounding the scenic Suseong Pond.

Originally a multi-family residential building near Deulan Children’s Park, the structure has been renovated into a public anchor facility that fosters cultural interaction, sustainable practices, and urban regeneration. By reclaiming the existing parking area and converting it into a semi-outdoor communal space, the design encourages local residents to engage with the facility and the adjacent park. This adaptable ground-level zone supports outdoor cultural programs, including a library extension, electric vehicle charging stations, and multimedia functions such as a beam projector for public screenings.

A key element of the renovation is the energy-efficient envelope upgrade. The outdated, energy-draining façade was stripped and replaced with a double-skin façade system composed of lightweight insulation and aluminum-expanded metal panels. This cladding system not only provides a modern, low-maintenance exterior but also allows natural light and ventilation to permeate while offering flexibility through openable modular sections.

Inside, the design emphasizes continuity between park and interior. Natural materials and warm tones extend the atmosphere of the outdoor environment, creating seamless transitions between public and private spaces. At the same time, the architects carefully balanced the dual function of the building—ensuring longer visitor stays while preventing complete privatization of public areas.

Spatially, the project integrates multiple former residential units into a cohesive whole. Open stairwells and shared floorplates establish cross-sectional connections that foster visual and auditory communication throughout the building. This sense of openness and interconnectedness strengthens the building’s role as a community hub rather than a fragmented structure.

The Daegu Anchor Facility is not just a renovated building but a prototype for sustainable urban renewal. By connecting residents with shared facilities and public programs, it contributes to a broader network of cultural infrastructure across Suseong-gu. The project embodies the district’s ongoing efforts to transform public space into valuable assets, supporting walkability, sustainable living, and a stronger neighborhood identity.
