In a world increasingly defined by urban sprawl and social isolation, ESSENCE reimagines the potential of sustainable community architecture as a medium for connection. Designed by Tuba Altuntop and Ekin Kiricioglu, this shortlisted entry of the Live Green competition reflects an architectural philosophy rooted in inclusivity, ecology, and cultural regeneration.

Concept and Philosophy

At the core of ESSENCE lies the belief that architecture can be a living entity — a bridge between space, identity, and culture, constantly evolving while remaining nourished by its origins. The project embodies this notion by transforming built environments into opportunities for human encounters and collective growth.

The design seeks to dissolve the boundaries between the city and countryside, creating shared spaces that integrate different modes of living. This architectural approach enables a dynamic exchange between urban efficiency and rural authenticity — between the rapid and the rooted.

Design Strategy: Spatial Encounters and Integration

ESSENCE employs architectural design as a social catalyst. The spatial organization enhances the likelihood of spontaneous encounters, turning alleys, courtyards, and transitional zones into nodes of interaction. Each structure within the complex contributes to a micro-community system, encouraging residents to engage, collaborate, and coexist harmoniously.

The plans — developed across multiple levels — demonstrate a thoughtful layering of private and public functions. The 1/500 and 1/200 plans and sections reveal a modular approach where units for 1–4 people interlock within a shared network of open and semi-open spaces, maintaining a delicate balance between privacy and community engagement.

Materiality and Sustainability

Sustainability in ESSENCE extends beyond energy efficiency. The project’s material choices reflect the local vernacular — emphasizing the use of regional stone, climate-responsive design, and minimal environmental footprint. Its construction logic is rooted in the principles of green urbanism, where architecture becomes a framework for social and environmental equilibrium rather than a static form.

Cultural Continuity and Social Inclusion

Beyond its physical manifestation, ESSENCE stands as an architectural metaphor for reconnection. It aims to reintegrate marginalized groups into the social fabric through thoughtful spatial design and cultural expression. By fostering inclusive living environments, the project envisions architecture as an act of healing — one that rebuilds relationships between people, place, and memory.

Through this approach, ESSENCE challenges the conventional narrative of development, proving that sustainable community architecture is not merely about technology or materials but about nurturing human values and shared belonging.

ESSENCE transcends architectural boundaries to articulate a new social vision — one where built form and human experience coalesce into a cohesive ecosystem. In doing so, it reminds us that architecture is most powerful when it celebrates coexistence, sustainability, and the essence of humanity itself.
