Global Art Community Unites in Opposition to War: Voices Speak Out Against Violence and Call for Peace
From Painters to Performers, Artists Across the Globe Use Their Creative Platforms to Promote Nonviolence and Advocacy for Conflict Resolution.
As protests continue around the world in response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the art community has voiced its condemnation of Putin's attack. Many have called for peace and solidarity with Ukraine, while others have taken more direct action.
The conflict has already resulted in the destruction of cultural sites, including the Ivankiv Historical and Local History Museum, which housed 25 works by folk artist Maria Prymachenko. As a result, some organizations, such as Moscow's Garage Museum of Contemporary Art, have ceased operations and publicly declared their anti-war stance.

Fashion designer Giorgio Armani used his platform to signal his heartbreak for the tragedy in silence during his recent catwalk show at Milan Fashion Week. Meanwhile, performance artist Marina Abramovic released a video declaring her solidarity with Ukraine and calling for an end to the conflict.

In the United States, the Metropolitan Opera has pledged not to work with artists and groups aligned with Putin, while in Italy, a Ukrainian Pavilion will be featured at the Triennale Milano International Exhibition. The Triennale has vowed to promote a series of events in preparation for the Ukrainian Pavilion, stating that "war will not triumph over dialogue and interaction."
Artists and cultural workers have also taken individual action against the war. Some have resigned from projects or requested the removal of their work from exhibitions in Moscow, such as artist Faith Holland, who asked the Multimedia Art Museum (MAMM) to remove her work "Touchscreen" from its international biennial.

In a show of solidarity against the war, more than 7,000 artists and cultural workers have signed a declaration against the conflict. Dmitry Vilensky, founder of the Russian collective Chto Delat?, noted the significant number of signatories and called for an end to the violence.
As the conflict in Ukraine rages on, the global art community has made its stance clear. From statements to actions, artists and organizations have expressed their support for Ukraine and their opposition to Putin's attack, showing that even in times of war, art remains a powerful force for change and unity.
