Nestled along the south bank of the Qiantang River in Hangzhou, China, the Yinxing Station and Daqiao Station are integral components of the 12-kilometer Hangzhou waterfront public space renovation in Binjiang District. Designed by TJAD Original Design Studio, this project redefines urban riverfront connectivity, blending nature, recreation, and architectural innovation.

Harmonizing Nature and Design

The site’s unique triangular form sits between a bustling residential area and the Qiantang River. Existing ginkgo trees were carefully preserved, inspiring the architectural design. In autumn, the fallen golden ginkgo leaves create a layered, textured ground that influenced the conceptual framework: a pattern of "one convex arc and two concave arcs." This motif was rotated, replicated, and nested to form the overall spatial organization, connecting the natural landscape with functional public spaces.

The gently sloping terrain features three adjacent “ginkgo leaf” platforms that lift upward, creating a multi-level landscape park. These elevated forms invite residents to climb, offering panoramic views of the Qiantang River while housing indoor community service spaces underneath. This design fosters both social interaction and visual connectivity with the surrounding environment.

Activating the Waterfront with Sports and Recreation

Adjacent to the Yinxing Station, the Linqiaoxiang Sports Park introduces dynamic public spaces inspired by the waves of the Qiantang River. A vibrant blue running track and orange cycling trail weave through the park, creating vertical movement that encourages exploration and physical activity. The park also features badminton courts, basketball courts, slides, balance beams, and outdoor fitness areas, providing diverse recreational opportunities for the community.

The basketball court integrates seamlessly with the elevated trails, connecting ground-level activity areas with elevated walkways, while shaded resting areas under the grandstands enhance comfort and usability. By layering active and passive spaces, the design encourages both movement and relaxation along the riverfront.

Daqiao Station: Bridging History and Modernity

Strategically positioned at the intersection of Liuhe Road and Wentao Road, Daqiao Station draws inspiration from the nearby Qiantang River Bridge. The main steel truss structure is rotated 45 degrees, while the triangular roof reflects the iconic spire of Liuhe Pagoda across the river. Exposed structural components serve as architectural features, creating a dialogue between engineering and design.

The facade employs large polyester boards with concave buckle detailing supported by T-shaped steel keels, reducing joints while maintaining an elegant aesthetic. Daqiao Station functions as a community hub, offering seating, rest areas, and a café that doubles as an exhibition space. A second-floor viewing platform provides sweeping vistas of the Qiantang River and Liuhe Pagoda, merging historic reference with contemporary urban life.

The Hangzhou Riverfront Public Space project exemplifies the integration of landscape, architecture, and public life. By responding to natural patterns, local history, and community needs, TJAD Original Design Studio has created a riverfront that is both visually striking and socially vibrant. From the flowing lines of ginkgo-inspired plazas to the undulating sports park trails, every element promotes interaction, movement, and enjoyment of the urban riverfront.
