Heritage Home Extension: A Detailed Look at Hanover Cottage Garden Room by Studio Ilk
Explore the Hanover Cottage Garden Room, a heritage home extension blending historical preservation with modern living in Battery Point, Australia.
Heritage home extensions require a delicate balance between modern needs and historical preservation, a challenge that Studio Ilk Architecture + interiors navigated skillfully in the design of the Hanover Cottage Garden Room in Battery Point, Australia.

The Vision Behind Hanover Cottage Garden Room
Responding to Heritage and Family Dynamics
Hanover Cottage, a heritage-listed property dating back to 1836, needed an extension that respected its historical context while enhancing the home’s functionality for a family of six with elderly parents. The design team at Studio Ilk aimed to create a space that not only respects but also celebrates the history of the property.

Design Principles and Conceptual Framework
The extension was designed with the core ideas of warmth, light, family, connection, and respect for history. These principles guided the integration of new structures with the old, ensuring that each addition was sympathetic to the original architectural elements.

Architectural Features of the Garden Room Extension
Construction and Layout
The new garden room serves as a nexus for daily activities, designed to maintain and improve the connection to the garden and pool areas. This connection is achieved through minimal increase in built footprint and the use of bi-fold doors that help blur the lines between indoor and outdoor spaces.

Materials and Sustainability
Following the theme of sustainability, materials from a demolished outbuilding were repurposed within the new design. Bricks were reused as courtyard paving, and timber decking was recycled to form new garden steps, highlighting the project’s commitment to environmental and historical preservation.

Enhancing Connection and Flow
Integration with the Garden
The extension's design emphasizes an open interface to the yard, maximizing views and access to the garden and pool terrace. This approach not only enhances the liveability of the space but also strengthens the connection with the natural surroundings.

Interior Design Elements
Internally, the space is characterized by light and tactile materials like sandstone and timber, which complement the existing white timber-lined cathedral roof of the sunroom. These choices reflect the family’s desire for a robust, yet warm and inviting home environment.

The Impact of the Garden Room Extension
The Hanover Cottage Garden Room by Studio Ilk represents a thoughtful heritage home extension that addresses the complex needs of a modern family while respecting the historical significance of the site. This project serves as a model for how heritage homes can be sensitively and sustainably adapted to meet contemporary needs without losing their historical essence.
