Located in Xitun District, Taichung, HOI Construction’s Office by InOrder Studio is a 119 m² workspace that reflects the craftsmanship and hands-on spirit of its founder, Mr. Wang. With a deep background in construction, Mr. Wang envisioned an office that serves as a practical yet inspiring “oasis” for him and his team, offering a refreshing contrast to the intensity of construction sites.

Industrial Materials and Personalized Details

From the outset, the design emphasized materials commonly found in construction: plywood, galvanized steel, and glass. These raw materials are not only durable but also carry an aesthetic expression of texture and industrial character. The galvanized steel panels, treated with dilute hydrochloric acid, reveal layered textures along the plywood edges—small details that delighted Mr. Wang and give the office its distinct identity. Supporting local craftsmanship, one of the colleagues’ family businesses supplied glass elements, further embedding personal connections into the design.

Modular Storage and Functional Order

The office layout balances openness with organization. Surrounding the workspace, a modular storage system conceals files, an electrical enclosure, a snack cabinet, and a fridge behind perforated plywood and steel panels. These panels function as pegboards for hanging work vests, hats, and tools, while also integrating lighting for kitchen and sink areas. This modular approach ensures a tidy, flexible environment that adapts to daily workflows.

Clever Structural Design

HOI Construction’s team built the office themselves, incorporating clever structural elements that double as functional features. Square tubes extend from the ceiling to the office tables, providing conduits for wiring and supporting the slim aluminum extrusion lightings suspended above. Tubes under the tables further reinforce structural stability while maintaining clean, clutter-free surfaces. This innovative approach transforms typical office furniture into efficient, multi-functional installations.

A Space for Daily Life

Mrs. Wang’s vision guided the design toward comfort and community, including a large bar counter and resting areas for staff returning from sites. In this office, simple materials gain complex personalities: plywood and galvanized steel express uniqueness, and modular dimensions define spatial order. The office table, described as “a boat ready to sail,” embodies the spirit of daily life—structured yet playful, repetitive yet interesting.

HOI Construction’s Office is a masterclass in industrial office design, modular workspace solutions, and personalized interiors. It balances functionality with humor, reflecting the craft-oriented mindset of its founder while creating a flexible, efficient, and visually engaging environment for Taichung’s construction professionals.
