House L by Kiti Vieira Arquitetura: A Minimalist Forest Retreat in Paraty, Brazil
House L by Kiti Vieira Arquitetura is a 54 m² forest retreat in Paraty, using eucalyptus, polycarbonate, and sustainable, elevated minimalist design.
Nestled in the lush Corisquinho neighborhood of Paraty, House L by Kiti Vieira Arquitetura is a stunning example of minimalist forest architecture, where simplicity meets sustainability. Completed in 2024, this 54 m² retreat demonstrates a delicate balance between natural integration, innovative design, and material efficiency. Photographed by Pedro Napolitano Prata, the house offers a serene escape amid the treetops and crystal-clear river pools.

Access and Site Integration
Accessing House L is an experience in itself. Visitors cross a charming cable and wooden bridge spanning the river, flanked by pristine pools on both sides. The terrain gradually rises, revealing the house elevated among the tree canopies, seamlessly blending architecture with the surrounding forest. This thoughtful siting enhances privacy while offering breathtaking views and a sense of floating above the landscape.

Minimalist Program and Spatial Layout
The house features a simple yet functional program, comprising a porch, living room, and bedroom. Internal partitions are lightweight and curved, never reaching the ceiling, defining intimate spaces like the bedroom and bathroom with a hot tub, while maintaining open visual connections throughout. This layout emphasizes a fluid integration of the indoor spaces with nature, allowing the house to feel both cozy and expansive.

Materiality and Sustainable Construction
Sustainability drives the material choices of House L. The primary structure is made from treated eucalyptus, sourced locally and transported with care across the bridge — a logistical challenge that underscores the commitment to regional resources. The wooden floor eliminates the need for a concrete slab, while corrugated polycarbonate panels enclosed in wooden frames create lightweight, translucent walls.
The recycled roof is both practical and environmentally conscious, chosen for its lightweight structure and ease of transport on foot, reflecting the architects’ dedication to low-impact design.

Innovative Window and Envelope Design
Windows were carefully designed to maximize views and ventilation. In the living room and kitchen, retractable glass panels open entirely, preserving unobstructed views of the forest. For the bedroom and bathroom, polycarbonate panels provide privacy while still allowing natural light to filter through. The darker polycarbonate shades help control brightness and enhance comfort throughout the day.

Doors connecting the porch to the interior are articulated and retractable, expanding the social space and reinforcing the fluid connection between indoors and outdoors. The polycarbonate envelope offers a 360-degree appreciation of the surrounding vegetation, creating an immersive forest experience from every corner of the house.

A Harmonious Forest Retreat
House L exemplifies how thoughtful architecture can harmonize with nature while maintaining minimal environmental impact. From the use of locally sourced eucalyptus to the innovative polycarbonate envelope and recycled roof, every design decision prioritizes sustainability without compromising comfort or aesthetics. Elevated among the treetops, the house offers a serene retreat where occupants can fully immerse themselves in the beauty of Paraty’s forest landscape.
