A Contemporary Brazilian Pavilion Rooted in Vernacular Tradition

The Pavilhão Varanda House by ARQBR Arquitetura e Urbanismo reinterprets traditional Brazilian porch architecture through a modern lens. Located in the South Individual Housing Sector of Brasília, this leisure pavilion complements an existing residential property, offering a refined, multifunctional space for family recreation and entertaining guests. Designed as an autonomous architectural structure, it reflects the cultural significance of the “varanda” while providing contemporary utility and aesthetic harmony within the broader residential site.

Modern Steel Structure Meets Timeless Brazilian Design

Built in 2023 and spanning 2,024 m², the Pavilhão Varanda is thoughtfully situated at the heart of the site, serving as a spatial transition between the original house and a lush rear garden. The structure uses SAC 300 steel, initially untreated to allow a natural corten patina to develop over time, lending the pavilion a dynamic, earthy appearance. It rests on a concrete foundation to shield against humidity, ensuring both resilience and longevity.

Integrated Space for Family, Nature, and Celebration

The project’s program includes a generous social area, a barbecue zone, a bathroom, and a storage room—all designed for fluid interaction. A wide wooden deck connects the pavilion to the main residence, enhancing the experience of outdoor living with direct access to a swimming pool. The indoor-outdoor continuity is further reinforced by movable brises made of perforated metal plates. These architectural elements allow natural light and ventilation to filter in while maintaining privacy and shade.
