Luxury Rural Hotel Design in Portugal: Nossa House by Studio Astolfi
A sophisticated rural hotel in Portugal blending Alentejo tradition with contemporary luxury through architecture, materials, and custom design.
An Alentejo-Inspired Retreat Crafted With Architectural Artistry
In the rolling landscapes of Campinho, Reguengos de Monsaraz, luxury rural hotel design finds its most poetic expression in Nossa House, a 2023 project by Studio Astolfi. Nestled in the heart of Alentejo, this 1500-square-meter property, owned by José Avillez and Sofia Ulrich, presents a refined balance between rustic charm and contemporary comfort. With breathtaking views of Alqueva Lake, the project is a homage to the serene beauty of southern Portugal, crafted with an artisanal touch that redefines rural hospitality.

From the moment one enters, Nossa House offers more than just a stay—it offers an immersive experience in the landscape and culture of the region. The architecture responds to the calm rhythm of the countryside, celebrating texture, color, and materiality with an intimate understanding of place.

A Space Where Craftsmanship Meets Contemporary Design
Inside, the interiors display a masterclass in custom detailing, where every corner reveals the thoughtful hand of the designer. Studio Astolfi has created a cohesive, warm environment with bespoke furniture and objects designed specifically for the house. Wood, straw, ceramics, and natural stone dominate the material palette, bringing tactile authenticity to the interiors. The Sala da Ruína, with its large custom-designed sofa, and the Sala de Caça, with its inlaid cabinetry, exemplify this artisanal attention to detail.

The ambiance throughout the house is one of effortless sophistication. Rich terracotta and earthy orange tones contrast against the clean lime-white walls, echoing the surrounding landscape. These hues, combined with carefully curated decorative pieces, create an atmosphere of lived-in elegance. The architecture supports this palette by allowing natural light to enhance the textures and layers within each room, adding dimension and warmth.

Respecting the Region’s Spirit Through Architecture
Inspired by the Alentejo, Studio Astolfi designed Nossa House as a luxurious yet grounded retreat that respects its geographic and cultural context. The architectural intent was to build a sanctuary of wellbeing and quietude that simultaneously offers guests full access to the amenities of a premium stay. Each of the ten suites is designed with private outdoor spaces—patios, balconies, or porches—reinforcing the sense of solitude and openness.

Every design move reflects a deep respect for nature and vernacular tradition. The materials and spatial composition evoke the agricultural and artisanal heritage of the region while introducing elements of luxury that feel neither imposed nor artificial. Rather than emulating international standards of luxury, Nossa House defines its own through intimacy, locality, and refined simplicity.

Hospitality Rooted in Comfort and Culture
Nossa House functions not only as a hotel but also as a lived-in home—an intentional gesture by Studio Astolfi to bridge domestic warmth with hospitality excellence. Shared spaces such as the living and dining rooms are open and interconnected, encouraging conversation and comfort. A library, bar, cinema room, and wine cellar offer guests moments of private enjoyment and discovery.

The outdoor area mirrors the interior’s contemplative character. Landscaped with the same sensitivity to place, it features secluded seating areas and a fire pit that invites storytelling under the vast Alentejo sky. The setting fosters a rare kind of stillness, where luxury is defined not by opulence but by care, craft, and connection to nature.

Redefining Luxury Rural Hotel Design
Nossa House sets a benchmark for luxury rural hotel design, showing how architectural integrity, artisanal detail, and cultural sensitivity can come together in a seamless whole. Studio Astolfi’s work here does not merely serve function—it elevates the entire experience of rural living into one of contemporary relevance and timeless beauty.
