Luzinterruptus Illuminates Our Plastic Predicament: Shedding Light on Our Synthetic Existence
Can We Escape the Grip of Plastic? Luzinterruptus Shines a Light on Our Struggle

Mumbai, India - In a striking display of artistic activism, renowned art collective Luzinterruptus captured the attention of locals and festival-goers at the prestigious Mumbai Urban Art Festival (MUAF) with their thought-provoking installation titled "The Plastic We Live With." As an architectural journalist, I had the opportunity to witness this captivating piece firsthand, which aimed to visually depict the overwhelming abundance of plastic in our daily lives.
At MUAF, Luzinterruptus sought to raise awareness about the pervasive issue of plastic consumption and its detrimental impact on the environment. The collective ingeniously transformed the façade of Evelyn Guesthouse, located in the vibrant Colaba district, into a powerful symbol of the plastic epidemic. By meticulously filling every gap in the building's exterior with donated plastic bags, the team created an illusion of overflowing plastic that captivated both daytime passers-by and nighttime spectators.
The collaborative effort was made possible through the generous support of the Mumbai First team, who rallied the community and local businesses to contribute over 8,000 plastic bags. While the Indian bags lacked a diverse range of printed colours, this unexpected constraint worked in favour of the installation, lending it a more organic and sombre aesthetic, in stark contrast to the opulent luxury of the surrounding district.
During the day, the installation exhibited a hauntingly unhealthy appearance, accentuated by the juxtaposition with the magnificent neighbouring facades. The windows, transformed into canvases of vibrant toxic plastic vegetation, stood as a striking reminder of the ecological impact of our plastic-laden existence. As night fell, the installation took on an eerie luminosity, as the windows glowed from within, casting an otherworldly glow upon the streets.
The impact of "The Plastic We Live With" was profound, drawing crowds of curious onlookers and concerned locals over its five-day display period. The festival's promotion played a pivotal role in attracting attention to Luzinterruptus' powerful statement, ensuring that the installation reached a wide audience eager to engage with contemporary art that addresses pressing environmental issues.
Luzinterruptus extends its heartfelt gratitude to the 50 dedicated volunteers and workers who selflessly contributed their time and expertise to bring this remarkable installation to life. Julia, Rhea, Thomas, Arjun, Summet, Sohil, Akmal, and the entire team behind "The Plastic We Live With" exemplify the spirit of collaboration and artistic activism that has made the Mumbai Urban Art Festival a renowned platform for social and cultural dialogue.
As the global conversation surrounding plastic waste intensifies, Luzinterruptus' participation in the Mumbai Urban Art Festival has undeniably elevated the discourse by ingeniously fusing art and architecture to shed light on the urgency of reducing plastic consumption. Their impactful installation serves as a reminder that collective action and creative interventions can inspire change and pave the way towards a more sustainable future.
