Media Library and Earth-Based Third Place by DEAR + Celeste Architecture
Sustainable earth-based library fosters community engagement, heritage restoration, participatory design, and ecological construction as a vibrant “Third Place” in France.
Nestled in the historic town of Bazouges-la-Pérouse, France, the Media Library and Earth-Based Third Place is a striking example of sustainable cultural architecture. Designed by DEAR + Celeste Architecture, the 335 m² project, completed in 2023, redefines the concept of a “Third Place”: a communal hub for learning, social interaction, and cultural expression. Photographed by François Dantart and Celeste Architecture, the library seamlessly integrates heritage restoration with modern ecological principles.

Concept and Vision
Commissioned by the Community of Municipalities of Couesnon Marches de Bretagne, the project aimed to create a cultural landmark that fosters community engagement. Conceived as a versatile space, the building functions not only as a media library but also as a civic gathering point, event venue, and educational hub. Every element of the design encourages participation, accessibility, and interaction, reflecting a holistic approach to communal living.

Sustainable Design and Earth-Based Construction
Sustainability lies at the heart of the project. The architects prioritized earth as the primary construction material, collaborating with Ecobatys and Bruded to craft an energy-efficient, low-carbon building (E3 C1 standard). This approach reinforces ecological responsibility while maintaining harmony with the town’s historical heritage. The rehabilitation and extension respect existing architecture while making a bold environmental statement.
Participatory Architecture
A hallmark of the project is its participatory design and construction process. Residents, volunteers, stakeholders, and end-users were actively involved in defining the space, from planning to execution. The project featured training sites for earth masons, insertion programs, and hands-on participatory building workshops, ensuring knowledge transfer and a sense of ownership among the community.

Interior and Spatial Experience
Inside, the library features open reading areas, flexible community spaces, and intimate corners designed for study and reflection. Natural light floods through large windows, emphasizing transparency and connection to the surrounding environment. Carefully designed shelving, dining areas, and communal tables create an adaptable, human-centered interior that accommodates diverse uses.

Legacy and Cultural Impact
The Media Library and Earth-Based Third Place serves as a manifesto for ecological construction while revitalizing community life in Bazouges-la-Pérouse. It demonstrates how cultural architecture, participatory methods, and sustainable building practices can converge to create a truly inclusive, environmentally responsible public space.
