MIS – Sound and Image Museum of Ceará by Carvalho Araújo
The MIS – Sound and Image Museum of Ceará by Carvalho Araújo blends culture, urban design, and architecture into a dynamic landmark.
A Contemporary Landmark in Fortaleza, Brazil
The MIS – Museu da Imagem e do Som do Ceará (Sound and Image Museum of Ceará), designed by Carvalho Araújo, stands as a cultural and architectural milestone in Fortaleza. Completed in 2022, the 2,800 m² museum embodies a thoughtful dialogue between heritage, modern design, and urban integration.
Situated near the Palácio da Abolição, the museum creates a respectful architectural relationship with the historic landmark. Its design considers not only scale and proportion but also its urban context, ensuring the building blends seamlessly into the city while offering a new identity for the cultural landscape.

Urban Integration and Spatial Concept
The museum is strategically positioned along the land’s boundary, opening up the front urban space. This decision allowed architects to design a frontal square, envisioned as an extended urban carpet that rises into a vertical façade element.
This gesture creates a continuous dialogue between stage and screen, reflecting the museum’s mission of connecting sound, image, and public life. The square serves as a transitional zone, blurring the boundaries between the public realm and the institutional interior.

Architectural Expression: Stage and Amphitheater
A defining feature of the project is the covered exterior space that separates the horizontal and vertical volumes. This architectural move recalls the imagery of ancient amphitheaters, transforming the museum into a contemporary stage for the city.
The façade design is not only a structural and aesthetic statement but also a symbolic one—representing the museum as both a cultural screen and a civic stage where history, technology, and community converge.

Interior Design and Visitor Experience
Inside, the MIS offers a fluid spatial experience. Structural beams and carefully framed openings create a sense of rhythm and scale, while interior volumes are designed to enhance sound, light, and visual perception. The layout supports flexible exhibitions, interactive installations, and multimedia performances, aligning with the museum’s mission to explore audio-visual culture in Brazil.

A Cultural Beacon for Ceará
The Sound and Image Museum of Ceará is more than a building—it is a cultural landmark, a civic square, and a stage for collective memory. By merging architecture, urban design, and cultural identity, Carvalho Araújo has crafted a project that strengthens Fortaleza’s position as a hub for arts and innovation.
