Ninth Coffee Shop Design by STUDIO FSJ Redefines Urban Café Experience in Shanghai

Located in the vibrant commercial environment of Shanghai, the Ninth Coffee Shop by STUDIO FSJ presents a fresh interpretation of modern café design. Positioned within the outdoor atrium of Changfeng Joy City, this 75-square-meter project embraces its urban context by blending openness, movement, and social interaction into a compact architectural footprint.

Urban Context and Open-Concept Café Design

Unlike traditional enclosed cafés, Ninth Coffee Shop thrives within an all-outdoor climate, benefiting from the spatial openness of the shopping complex. The square atrium layout and surrounding pedestrian flow create a dynamic street-like atmosphere, allowing the café to function as both a destination and a transitional social hub.

At the heart of the design lies a central architectural concept, the kiosk. Acting as an anchor, the kiosk resembles a pavilion found in public squares, open from all directions. This strategic positioning ensures high visibility and accessibility, naturally attracting foot traffic and encouraging spontaneous interaction.

Kiosk-Centered Layout Enhancing Customer Experience

The innovative layout reimagines conventional café planning by bringing the coffee counter to the forefront. Instead of hiding the preparation process, the design celebrates it, allowing customers to witness coffee-making up close. This transparency enhances engagement and transforms the act of buying coffee into a shared urban experience.

With entrances on both sides, the kiosk operates like an island, seamlessly integrating circulation paths. Visitors can approach, pause, or pass through, making the café an interactive spatial node rather than a static retail unit.

Sculptural Terrazzo Interior and Spatial Organization

A defining feature of the project is its continuous terrazzo structure, which flows organically from the kiosk into the interior. This cave-like form unifies different functional zones, including the coffee bar, cashier, storage, and seating areas.

The terrazzo mass evokes the feeling of carved stone, introducing a sense of permanence and material richness. As it bends and extends across the space, it interacts with existing structural columns, creating a fluid spatial narrative. The resulting geometry subtly compresses and expands circulation paths, offering layered visual connections and diagonal sightlines within the compact layout.

Material Contrast and Human-Centered Design

Balancing the heaviness of terrazzo, the café’s façade introduces lightness through translucent glass and delicate structural elements. This contrast enhances visual permeability, inviting passers-by to engage with the interior.

A distinctive leaf-shaped seating area runs along the façade, gently curving inward as if embracing visitors. This organic gesture softens the architectural language and reinforces the café’s welcoming atmosphere.

To further humanize the scale, warm cherry wood rods are integrated into the façade design. These elements break down the building’s larger proportions, creating a more intimate and comfortable environment for customers.

Activating Public Space and Enhancing Interaction

One of the most compelling aspects of the design is its approach to public engagement. By intentionally relinquishing part of the interior footprint, the architects activate the boundary between the café and the mall corridor. This strategy reduces the sense of a transitional passage and instead transforms it into a lively social interface.

The result is a porous and interactive environment where indoor and outdoor spaces merge seamlessly, encouraging communication, gathering, and urban vibrancy.

 A New Paradigm for Small-Scale Café Architecture

Ninth Coffee Shop exemplifies how thoughtful design can elevate a small commercial space into an experiential urban landmark. Through its kiosk-centered layout, sculptural materiality, and open engagement with the public realm, the project redefines the boundaries of café architecture in dense urban settings.
