Ramp Space – Dynamic Multi-Functional Exhibition Hub in Beijing
A multi-functional Beijing space with concrete slopes, scaffolding elements, skylights, and flexible areas fostering exhibitions, offices, retail, and creative interaction.
Ramp Space, designed by SpaceStation, is a 367 m² multifunctional venue in Beijing, China, completed in 2024. Curated by HAN Shuangyu, this innovative project seamlessly integrates exhibition areas, pop-up activity zones, personal offices, and retail spaces, creating a versatile environment that encourages creativity, collaboration, and public engagement.



Concept and Spatial Design
The core concept behind Ramp Space was to create a stress-free, vibrant space for designers, artists, and visitors alike. The patron envisioned a site fostering relaxation and interaction, where artistic expression and professional activity could coexist without barriers. To achieve this, the architects retained the original 9-meter-high ceiling, preserving the sense of vertical openness while introducing a concrete slope that redefines the spatial dynamics of the ground plane.
The slope rises directly from the floor, subtly disrupting the static solidity of the original space. This intervention not only transforms circulation but also cleverly conceals service areas such as offices, storage, and backstage facilities beneath it. A narrow fissure in the slope exposes its structural composition, revealing its board-like construction and creating a visual and functional connection between the exhibition hall and backstage areas.
Some sections of the slope double as steps, invoking the communal intimacy of ancient theaters or lecture halls. This design gesture infuses the space with a humanistic touch, encouraging visitors to explore, ascend, and engage with the architecture as part of the exhibition experience.



Materiality and Structural Expression
The use of concrete for the slope emphasizes stability and permanence, reflecting the transition from ground to slope to fixed states. In contrast, a significant portion of the exhibition hall utilizes scaffolding, a temporary yet vital construction element. The scaffolding introduces a sense of freedom, fluidity, and adaptability, dividing the space into entrances, passages, bars, and exhibition zones while promoting playful interaction.
By juxtaposing the permanence of concrete with the impermanence of scaffolding, Ramp Space embodies architectural duality, offering visitors both structural stability and a lively, flexible environment that encourages exploration and participation.


Lighting and Acoustic Adaptations
The architects implemented a carefully curated lighting plan, filtering out diffused light from surrounding windows and introducing skylights to highlight circulation paths and exhibition areas. Ceiling adaptations were applied to control sound reverberation, enabling the space to accommodate diverse event formats, from exhibitions and pop-up activities to office functions and public gatherings.


A Venue for Creativity and Engagement
Ramp Space succeeds as a multifunctional hub where spatial design, material innovation, and adaptive interventions converge. It reflects SpaceStation’s approach to flexible, human-centered architecture, emphasizing interaction, creativity, and aesthetic experience. Visitors encounter a dynamic environment that balances permanence and impermanence, structure and play, ensuring every visit feels unique.
