Senior Shelter Netherlands Architecture by i29: A Sculptural Black-Timber Home for Multi-Generational Living

A Distinctive Home Embracing Privacy and Connection

Located in Hoofddorp, the Senior Shelter designed by Dutch studio i29 is a refined architectural response to the needs of an elderly couple seeking proximity to family while maintaining privacy. Set within the garden of their children’s property and surrounded by lush greenery, the 100-square-meter single-storey house offers a tranquil retreat that balances openness with intimacy.

Architectural Concept and Sculptural Form

The house is defined by a large, overhanging gable roof with white-painted rafters that contrast dramatically with the black timber-clad exterior walls. This bold black timber façade lends the building a strong sculptural presence that stands out yet dialogues gently with the natural surroundings. The expansive roof extends beyond the building’s volume, creating sheltered walkways that blur the boundaries between interior and exterior spaces.

Harmonizing Interior and Exterior Spaces

At the core of Senior Shelter is a central patio that connects the kitchen, dining, and living areas, fostering a seamless flow between indoor and outdoor living. Large retractable sliding doors open up to this outdoor space, allowing light and fresh air to permeate the home, enhancing the sense of spaciousness. This design strategy creates a living environment where the interior extends naturally into the surrounding garden.

Thoughtful Spatial Organization for Comfort and Privacy

The private zones, including the bedroom and bathroom, are situated on the northern side of the home, distanced from the social areas to provide seclusion and quiet for the residents. Organizing these diverse functional areas under one expansive roof was a design challenge for i29, but the result is a cohesive yet flexible living arrangement that supports comfort and ease for its elderly inhabitants.

Interior Materials and Atmosphere

Inside, the Senior Shelter features pale grey concrete flooring and light oak wall cladding that wraps continuously around the interior, emphasizing the spaciousness and high ceilings. Custom joinery complements the clean, minimalist aesthetic, creating an environment that is both warm and refined. The juxtaposition of dark exterior and light interior materials enhances the home’s architectural narrative.
