A Vessel-Shaped Home Embracing Sky and Nature
Sky Vessel House by NKS2 Architects is a remarkable residential project located in suburban Fukuoka, Japan. Designed for a couple who frequently host guests for work and leisure, the house seamlessly combines privacy, openness, and social interaction. The architects envisioned a dwelling that would improve its suburban surroundings while offering residents a strong sense of connection with nature, light, and sky.

Design Concept – Privacy with Openness
The site is surrounded by houses, apartments, and a busy road. To create privacy without sacrificing openness, the architects designed a distorted circular floor plan enclosed by a vessel-shaped tiled roof. This dramatic roof shields the interiors from external views while opening them upward to the sky, sunlight, and natural ventilation.

The perimeter wall, softened with gardens, acts as both a protective boundary and a green buffer that integrates the house into its suburban context. High sidelights and small ventilation windows maintain privacy, while interior curving plaster walls provide a serene backdrop for artwork and decoration.

Spatial Experience – Light, Air, and Flow
Although enclosed from the outside, the interiors are bright, open, and flexible. Facing the courtyard, a series of large, uniquely shaped openings bring in natural light, breezes, and greenery, blurring the boundary between indoor and outdoor living.

The house was designed not only as a residence but also as a venue for gatherings, gallery displays, and parties, supporting the clients’ lifestyle and social needs.

Structural Innovation – A Radial Timber Framework
At the heart of the design lies an innovative radial structure. Laminated timber beams extend outward from a central point to support the expansive roof. The distances from the center to the perimeter walls are adjusted to create diverse interior volumes.

This system allows for varying ceiling heights—lower ceilings in the garage and private entrance, and soaring, open spaces in the living and dining areas, where people gather most. The result is a home of dynamic spatial rhythm, offering intimacy and grandeur under one continuous roof.

A Dialogue with the Sky
The curved tile roof is more than a shelter—it’s an atmospheric device. It frames the sky, collects rainwater, and reflects sunlight in soft patterns across the interiors. Sitting on the courtyard bench and gazing upward, residents feel immersed in the natural world, as though the architecture itself has dissolved into the sky.
