Sotto Restaurant and Bar: A Masterpiece by Parts and Labor Design
An exploration of Sotto Restaurant and Bar's sophisticated design and ambiance by Parts and Labor Design, blending vintage allure and modern elegance.
Tucked beneath the bustling streets of New York City lies Sotto, a sophisticated subterranean Amaro bar designed by Parts and Labor Design. Completed in 2023, this 204 m² space offers a unique blend of vintage allure and contemporary elegance, embodying a "Mad Men on holiday" theme envisioned by founder Mark Barak. This article explores the meticulous design and architectural brilliance that make Sotto a quintessential New York destination.

Concept and Design Inspiration
Sotto is not merely a bar; it is an experience. The design brief given by Mark Barak—“Mad Men on holiday”—is reflected throughout the space, offering a nostalgic yet fresh ambiance. The narrative continues from Lupetto, a previous venture by Barak, where the theme of a little wolf maturing and exploring new freedoms is artfully portrayed.

Entrancing Ambiance
The journey into Sotto begins at the stairwell, where inlaid brass wolf paw prints set the tone for what lies ahead. The low-lit, pink, and golden-hued vignettes create a welcoming yet mysterious atmosphere, described by designer Danu Hassik as “unapologetically sexy.” The mood lighting and rich color palette are designed to make guests lose track of time, immersing them completely in the present moment.

Lighting and Materiality
Lighting plays a pivotal role in crafting Sotto’s distinctive ambiance. A velvet-framed chandelier with hand-dyed tassels serves as the focal point, providing a soft, inviting glow. Triangular metallic sconces and delicate lamps adorn the walls like jewels, adding to the bar's luxurious feel. The dark burled wood cladding on the walls and ceiling enhances the sense of intimacy and exclusivity.

Custom Furniture and Layout
Parts and Labor Design has paid exceptional attention to the furniture layout, creating spaces that cater to various group sizes and moods. The outward-facing banquettes, custom-designed and fabricated by Parts and Labor, invite social interaction, while a glamorous sofa-styled banquette in a cozy nook offers a more intimate setting. Rich materials like luxe pink velvet not only add to the visual appeal but also encourage a tactile experience, inviting guests to get close and comfortable.

Craftsmanship and Details
The bar’s craftsmanship is evident in every detail, from the custom lighting fixtures to the bespoke furniture. The use of materials from renowned manufacturers such as Bendheim Glass, Cle Tile, DDS, Fireclay, and Koroseal, coupled with the precision of TSF Engineering’s MEP work and the execution by Vertical Space contractors, underscores the high standards maintained throughout the project.

Atmosphere and Experience
Sotto’s ambiance is designed to be transporting. “The moment you enter, you forget what time it is, let alone what number cocktail you’re on,” says designer Danu Hassik. This statement encapsulates the essence of Sotto—a place where time stands still, and the present moment takes precedence. The bar’s focus on craft Amaro further enhances the experience, offering a refined menu that complements the sophisticated surroundings.

Sotto Restaurant and Bar is a testament to the prowess of Parts and Labor Design. By merging a nostalgic theme with contemporary design elements, they have created a space that is both timeless and of-the-moment. Whether you’re looking for a place to unwind after a long day or a chic spot to celebrate, Sotto promises an unforgettable experience. This hidden gem beneath New York’s streets is destined to become a staple in the city’s vibrant bar scene, captivating guests with its enchanting design and impeccable ambiance.
