Sustainable Social Housing Design: Illa Glòries by Cierto Estudio in Barcelona
Illa Glòries in Barcelona redefines sustainable social housing design with gender-inclusive layouts, vibrant communal spaces, and eco-friendly construction.
Illa Glòries, designed by Cierto Estudio, is a landmark project in sustainable social housing design located at the intersection of Barcelona’s 22@ technological district and the historic Eixample neighborhood. Completed in 2024 after winning the 2017 IMHAB international competition, the development delivers 238 apartments, with Building A—housing 51 dwellings—crafted by Cierto Estudio as a model for inclusive, adaptable, and environmentally responsible urban living.

Integrating a Gender Perspective into Housing Design
One of the defining features of this sustainable social housing design is its integration of a gender perspective. The project addresses inclusivity, equity, and safety by implementing spatial strategies that foster interaction, visibility, and shared responsibility in domestic and caregiving roles. Apartments are designed to suit a diversity of family structures, ensuring the building adapts to evolving social needs while reducing risks associated with gender-based violence.

Communal Spaces that Strengthen Community
The Illa Glòries complex features two expansive courtyards and continuous communal balconies that create safe, vibrant spaces for social interaction. These spaces follow a “corrala” arrangement, where homes open onto shared walkways and balconies that overlook the courtyards. This layout enhances natural surveillance, providing residents with a secure living environment while encouraging mutual support among neighbors. Although the courtyards are protected from public activity, they remain visually connected to the street, balancing privacy with openness. The balconies act as dynamic meeting points, seamlessly linking residences to patios, rooftops, and shared green areas.

Flexible and Equitable Apartment Layouts
In keeping with its emphasis on inclusivity, the apartments in Illa Glòries are designed for flexibility and equality. Each unit eliminates the concept of a dominant central space, offering rooms of similar size to allow residents to arrange their homes freely. Kitchens are strategically placed to promote connectivity and interaction, while hinged spaces and centrally located rooms enable both privacy and visual connection. This flexible design supports independence as well as shared living, adapting to the changing needs of its occupants over time.

Environmental Responsibility and Energy Efficiency
Sustainability is at the heart of Illa Glòries. The building meets NZEB (Nearly Zero Energy Building) standards, with a cross-laminated timber (CLT) structure that minimizes environmental impact. Passive design strategies—such as cross-ventilation, solar protection, and green roofs—enhance energy efficiency and comfort. Over 60% of the site is dedicated to green spaces, helping mitigate the urban heat island effect and contributing to a healthier urban environment. Thermal insulation is maximized, ensuring energy demands remain low year-round.

A Model for Future Urban Living
Illa Glòries demonstrates how sustainable social housing design can balance density, inclusivity, and environmental stewardship. By integrating gender perspective strategies, fostering community through shared spaces, and implementing high environmental standards, Cierto Estudio has created a living model for future urban housing in Barcelona and beyond.

Through its innovative approach to equity, adaptability, and ecological responsibility, Illa Glòries sets a benchmark for sustainable social housing design. The project shows that socially inclusive and environmentally sustainable architecture can coexist, creating vibrant, safe, and adaptable communities within the dense urban fabric of a modern city.
