Project by Manish | Shortlisted Entry of The Black Taj Competition

“Mum-Taj is incomplete without her Master’s Soul…” This evocative line captures the spirit behind The Black Taj – KHQC13, a concept that reinterprets the legacy of Emperor Shah Jahan through the lens of Mughal architecture design. The project envisions a complementary monument across the Yamuna River, mirroring the Taj Mahal — not as a rival, but as its poetic frame.

A Dialogue Between Two Souls

The Taj Mahal stands as a timeless symbol of love, symmetry, and divine balance. Yet, this proposal challenges the notion of its completeness. Through intricate geometry and spiritual symbolism, The Black Taj becomes a resting ground — a sacred space where Shah Jahan’s soul reunites with Mumtaz Mahal in eternity.

The concept positions the new structure on the opposite bank of the Yamuna, creating a visual and emotional dialogue. This alignment is not merely geographic but metaphysical — one of soul and reflection, light and shadow, love and loss.

The Architecture of Framing

Inspired by Howard Hodgkin’s idea — “They are where the picture stops and the world begins” — the designer imagines The Black Taj as a frame around the white marble of the Taj Mahal. The act of framing transforms it from a passive monument to an active participant in the narrative of memory and devotion.

The architecture employs traditional Mughal vocabulary: pointed arches, intricate jaalis, and red sandstone masonry. Yet, these classical motifs are reinterpreted in a contemporary language — monumental voids, layered courtyards, and linear frames that rise like sentinels over time.

Spatial Composition and Geometry

The plan follows the rigorous geometry characteristic of Mughal architecture design — axial symmetry, balanced courtyards, and proportionate scaling. The central courtyard houses a symbolic tomb under a glowing dome, bathed in soft illumination to evoke transcendence. Stairs descend rhythmically into the earth, echoing the descent of the emperor’s soul, while elevated corridors open toward the river, connecting the sacred and the earthly.

The interplay of red sandstone and soft white plaster establishes a powerful contrast, resonating with the eternal duality of Shah Jahan and Mumtaz — black and white, masculine and feminine, earth and heaven.

Framing Eternity: A Vision of Unity

The Black Taj – KHQC13 redefines how we perceive the Taj Mahal — not as a solitary marvel, but as part of a cosmic pair. The project narrates the completion of a story left unfinished, giving Shah Jahan a final resting place that mirrors his creation and honors his vision.

Through the principles of Mughal architecture design, the project transforms absence into presence — creating an architectural dialogue where the White Taj reflects purity and love, while the Black Taj embodies depth, reflection, and redemption.

A Legacy Reimagined

This shortlisted entry by Manish exemplifies how architectural imagination can revive historical myths and reinterpret them for the future. The Black Taj is not just a monument; it is an emotion built of geometry, shadow, and devotion — where architecture becomes poetry, and design becomes memory.
