The Foodpath: A Closed-Loop Food Cycle Built Into a Single Building

What if a building could grow food on its roof, process it in its core, sell it on its ground floor, and compost the waste back into fertilizer for the next harvest? The Foodpath treats architecture not as a container for program but as a literal metabolic system, organizing four stages of the food cycle (farming, storage and processing, wholesaling, and waste recycling) along a single continuous path that loops back on itself. The result is a closed-loop diagram made habitable: a cradle-to-cradle food infrastructure disguised as a neighborhood amenity.

Designed by Yan Auyeung, Ka Sui Mok, Tsang Harry, and Tom Tom, The Foodpath was shortlisted in the Urban Meal Mine competition. The project situates itself within a dense urban neighborhood, carving out a pentagonal footprint surrounded by residential blocks and public green space. Its ambition is straightforward but expansive: make every phase of food production visible, participatory, and spatially connected.

A Pentagon in the Neighborhood

The site plan reveals a compact pentagonal building set within a field of green roofs and a surrounding water feature. Neighborhood blocks frame the site on all sides, establishing the project as a shared civic resource rather than an isolated agricultural compound. Public parks and open spaces double as community leisure zones, blurring the line between the building's food-production mandate and the everyday life of the district. The geometry of the pentagon allows the five functional sections (farming, storage, processing, commercial, and recycling) to each occupy a distinct face while remaining tightly linked by the central circulatory spine.

Five Programs, One Promenade

The exploded axonometric diagram is where the project's logic becomes most legible. Hand-drawn vignettes illustrate how each zone operates: rooftop farms where the public can grow food and learn sustainable practices, a market for wholesaling harvested produce, workshops and co-working areas for collaborative learning, and community kitchens that host seasonal events like the Rooftop Harvest Festival and Holiday Market. What ties these vignettes together is the Foodpath itself, a bridge-like circulation element that threads through every section. It functions simultaneously as connector, viewing gallery, and educational corridor, giving visitors a continuous, narrated experience of the food cycle.

The decision to make program legible through hand-drawn sketches is telling. It foregrounds human activity over abstract form, reinforcing the designers' argument that this building is meant to be occupied, touched, and understood by non-architects. Farm participation, workshops, and visual education are not afterthoughts bolted onto the architecture; they are the architecture.

Two section drawings cut through the multi-level market hall and expose the building's structural and environmental strategy. Clerestory glazing floods the interior with daylight, reducing energy loads while creating a generous, naturally lit volume for commerce and gathering. Above, a productive rooftop garden sits directly atop the market, making the relationship between growing and selling almost uncomfortably literal: the food you buy below was harvested from the soil above your head. Exposed roof trusses span the hall with a visual honesty that reads as both structural logic and spatial generosity, while a mezzanine level carves out additional program area for event spaces and community kitchens without sacrificing the hall's vertical openness.

The section also reveals how waste recycling is spatially integrated rather than hidden. Food waste is transformed into fertilizer and reintroduced to the farming zones, completing the closed loop. By making the recycling stage architecturally present, the designers resist the common urban impulse to push waste out of sight and out of mind. The green roof adapts seasonally, reinforcing the idea of the building as a living system that mirrors natural cycles rather than fighting them.

Why This Project Matters

The Foodpath takes a concept that could easily remain diagrammatic and gives it spatial depth. The strength of the proposal lies not in any single formal gesture but in the rigor of the loop: every zone feeds into the next, every waste product becomes an input, and every visitor is invited to witness and participate in the process. In a competition landscape crowded with vertical farms and photovoltaic facades, this project stands apart by insisting that sustainability is a social act as much as a technical one. Co-working spaces, community kitchens, and seasonal festivals are not decorative programming; they are the mechanisms through which behavior actually changes.

For Auyeung, Mok, Harry, and Tom, the building is a catalyst, not a monument. It positions architecture as a participatory ecosystem where communities grow food, share knowledge, and close loops together. The Foodpath does not solve the urban food crisis by itself, but it offers a compelling prototype: a building that produces as much as it consumes, and invites everyone inside to understand exactly how.
