The Jungle Residence: Tropical Urban Architecture in Ho Chi Minh City

The Jungle Residence by ROOM+ Design & Build is a striking example of tropical urban architecture in Vietnam, redefining the way dense metropolitan spaces can embrace greenery and community living. Completed in 2025, this 1350 m² project in Ho Chi Minh City stands as a bold response to the rapid urbanization of Vietnam’s cities, where the dominance of shophouses often leaves little room for innovation, sustainability, or livability.

The Challenge of Urban Vietnam

In the heart of Ho Chi Minh City, where plots are narrow and development pressure is immense, The Jungle Residence emerged as a solution to a complex site. With just 300 m² of land, a mandated 12-meter setback, and a chamfered southwest corner for future road expansion, the project faced enormous spatial constraints. Yet, instead of succumbing to conventional design, ROOM+ Design & Build embraced the challenge, orchestrating an innovative blend of retail, residential, and communal spaces.

A New Model of Tropical Urban Architecture

The Jungle Residence introduces a unique vision of tropical urban architecture, blending retail and residential functions within a vertical mixed-use building. The program includes:

  • A 150 m² basement for services
  • Over 300 m² of retail and commercial spaces
  • Nine flexible one-bedroom apartments ranging from 30 to 45 m²
  • A rooftop café and co-working space, crowned with a lush rooftop garden

This model demonstrates how thoughtful planning can transform limited sites into multifunctional, livable, and ecologically responsible buildings.

A Living Façade: Green Balconies and Organic Design

What sets The Jungle Residence apart is its façade, alive with cascading balconies of varying shapes and sizes, evoking the randomness of nature. In Vietnamese culture, balconies are not just aesthetic elements but vital extensions of daily life. Here, they are reimagined as green pockets filled with plants, offering shade, social spaces, and a connection to the outside world.

Vaulted columns, earthy clay tones, and curved glass surfaces create an organic architectural language. This design blurs the boundary between architecture and landscape, transforming the building into an urban jungle thriving within the city’s chaotic fabric.

Interior Spaces Inspired by Nature

Inside, the architectural language continues with warm clay finishes, soft curves, and organic forms. Each apartment opens onto balconies lush with greenery, offering residents intimate connections with nature despite the urban density. The rooftop café and co-working space nest under a canopy of slender, tree-like columns, with a glowing translucent roof that filters light like a forest canopy. A rooftop garden completes the experience, offering rare views and a sense of refuge within the city.

Sustainability as a Core Element

Sustainability is woven into every detail of The Jungle Residence. Natural ventilation and daylight enhance comfort and reduce energy demands, while rainwater is harvested through the building’s vertical structures for irrigation and safety use. Solar water heaters, low-E glazing, LED lighting, and automated watering systems further reduce environmental impact. Materials are locally sourced and blended with recyclable components, ensuring durability while honoring cultural and ecological values.

Redefining Urban Architecture in Vietnam

The Jungle Residence is more than a building—it is a quiet provocation. It shows that even within the densest urban contexts, architecture can reconnect people with nature, nurture community life, and offer sustainable solutions for the future. This project stands as a testament to the power of tropical urban architecture to inspire and transform cities like Ho Chi Minh.
