Transformative Church Renovation for Circus School in Ghent: Circusplanet by Plano architecten
Plano architecten transforms a Ghent church into Circusplanet, a circus school blending heritage with community engagement.
In Ghent, Belgium, the transformation of Malem’s church into Circusplanet by Plano architecten stands as a remarkable example of adaptive reuse in architecture. Completed in 2020, this 668 square meter project reimagines a sacred space as a vibrant circus school and community center, blending historical reverence with contemporary functionality.

Design Philosophy and Community Engagement
The project began with a participatory exploration, leading to a design competition won by Plano architecten due to their deep understanding of Malem’s neighborhood. The architects preserved the church's aesthetic and aura while introducing reversible interventions to accommodate the circus school's functional needs.

Architectural Interventions and Flexibility
Key interventions include opening the church's heavy oak gate and introducing a glass door to invite the community inside. The design maintains the church's inherent introversion while ensuring it remains welcoming and accessible. The main hall has been transformed into a flexible space for practice and performances, featuring a polished concrete floor and a steel rig structure that complements the church's original ceiling lines.

Spaces for Performance and Community
The renovation carefully considers the human scale, making the reception area and adjacent spaces pleasant for both performers and visitors. The foyer doubles as a cafeteria for the neighborhood, showcasing the project's versatility. Offices and changing rooms are discreetly integrated, respecting the church’s original structure while meeting the circus school's operational requirements.
Circusplanet by Plano architecten is a testament to the potential of architectural innovation to revitalize community spaces. By transforming a church into a circus school, the project not only provides a unique venue for artistic expression but also strengthens the social fabric of Ghent's Malem neighborhood. This adaptive reuse project exemplifies how historical buildings can be given a new lease on life, merging tradition with modern needs in a respectful and creative manner.
