Under the Eaves Coffee Shop – Displacement Architects’ Blend of Urban Pause and Cultural Memory in Shanghai

A Corner of Calm in the Heart of Shanghai

In a city where every square meter is contested—either underused or priced at a premium—Under the Eaves Coffee Shop emerges as an urban refuge. Designed by Displacement Architects, the project occupies two floors of the Shanghai Youth Cadre Management Institute, transforming them into a multifunctional learning, social, and leisure space.

When not hosting exhibitions, lectures, and youth training programs, the venue opens to the public as a coffee shop, reading space, and creative hub—a place where urban wanderers can pause and breathe.

Inspiration: Rural Memories in an Urban Setting

The concept draws on the architect’s rural childhood memories—evenings spent under the eaves where elders smoked quietly or sorted vegetables while conversing about daily life. This intimate, transitional space between indoors and outdoors is recreated here, offering shelter, shade, and a sense of belonging amid the fast pace of Shanghai.

On Guangzhong Road, the architectural canopy is shaped like an “eave”, forming a semi-outdoor buffer zone where visitors can watch the street life pass by. This gesture transforms the building’s edge into a welcoming public interface, bridging private function and urban interaction.

Design and Spatial Layout

• First Floor: Designed as a public-friendly environment, featuring landscaped corners, coffee service, bookshelves, and exhibition areas. Greenery softens the industrial edges, and large potted plants contribute to the relaxed atmosphere.
• Second Floor: Primarily dedicated to lectures, displays, and cultural events, the upper level maintains strong visual and spatial connectivity with the ground floor. A new double-concrete staircase replaces the previous steel one, reinforcing durability and accommodating generous planting pockets.

Materiality and Atmosphere

The semi-outdoor canopy is crafted from steel and wood—steel for structural connections and wood for tactile warmth. The ground beneath is covered with loose pebbles, avoiding over-paving and retaining a natural feel.

Inside and out, the design celebrates mosaic tiles reminiscent of the 1980s–1990s. This nostalgic texture is combined with a palette inspired by “green growth”, echoed in the abundant plants that animate the interiors. The result is a tactile, timeless environment that merges memory with modern function.

Architecture as a Continuing Story

Rather than a static design, the architects view the coffee shop as a stage for evolving stories. It’s an open invitation for people from different walks of life to create, converse, and connect under its protective canopy—continuing the design through lived experiences.

Project Significance

Under the Eaves Coffee Shop is more than a café—it’s a cultural gesture, a bridge between rural intimacy and urban vibrancy, and an example of how architecture can activate underused city spaces while fostering human connection.
