In the heart of Dawanshiju Hakka Village, Shenzhen, an extraordinary architectural gem has emerged, paying homage to the rich cultural heritage and enchanting legends of the Hakka people. The esteemed design firm, HAS Design and Research, presents the captivating FRAMEYARD project, an ethereal gift to the Hakka community that embraces their deep-rooted traditions and captures the essence of the sacred banyan tree.

For generations, the Hakka villagers have revered the banyan tree as a symbol of prosperity and longevity, planting it proudly in front of their homes. Now, HAS Design and Research beautifully retains this legend, transforming it into a magnificent architectural spectacle. The Freeing FrameYard project, located on the main axis of Dawanshiju Hakka Village, brilliantly encapsulates the history and culture of the traditional square Hakka enclosure, dating back over two centuries.

Drawing inspiration from the village's unique courtyard space, Hung And Songkittipakdee (HAS) seamlessly integrates the essence of Hakka textile traditions into the architectural design. During the day, the delicate interplay of nearly 5,000 tubes envelops visitors in a soft, dreamlike ambiance, blurring the boundaries between the concrete structures and providing a serene sanctuary for introspection and connection with the sky above. As night falls, hidden light strips within the structural beams mimic the gentle curves of a starry night, infusing the Hakka village with a sense of hope and wonder.

Approaching the entrance, guests are greeted by a breathtaking curtain-shaped arrangement of tubes, serving as a stage for Hakka New Year festivals and various cultural performances. This versatile space revitalizes the heritage site, injecting vibrant energy into the ancestral celebrations that have endured for centuries. Adjacent to the statue of Master Zengzi, the architectural marvel forms an arch-shaped structure with thousands of tubes, creating a profound atmosphere for ancestral worship while forging a harmonious dialogue between contemporary design and the village's centennial architecture.

Recognized as a unique highlight in the Bi-City Biennale of Urbanism/Architecture (UABB) of Shenzhen and Hong Kong, the design of FRAMEYARD showcases meticulous attention to detail. With a focus on preserving the integrity of the historic site, the building's height is thoughtfully limited to four meters. The base structure features a free-standing design, carefully avoiding any damage to the hallowed grounds. Meanwhile, the upper structure incorporates flexible adjustable screws, facilitating seamless integration with Hakka village festivities and fostering a harmonious relationship with the surrounding historic buildings.

More than just a physical structure, the Freeing FrameYard signifies a reimagined form of the Hakka village and becomes a treasured space where the Hakka people can express their deepest emotions. With its delicate interplay of tradition and innovation, this architectural marvel not only captures the hearts of the Hakka community but also beckons visitors from far and wide to experience the timeless allure of Dawanshiju Hakka Village.
